Most buyers opt for the fast and efficient 730d, but there's an engine for everyone (budget notwithstanding)

The 7 Series is more involving to drive than the Mercedes S-Class, though it's not quite as luxurious

Such things are relative though, and the 7 Series is still incredibly plush

The 261bhp 730d gets from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds, which should be adequate for most

Despite that respectable performance, the 730d officially returns 60.1mpg

Topping the 7 Series range it the four-wheel drive M760iL xDrive

At over £130,000 the M760iL is more than twice the price of the cheapest 7 Series

Stump up the cash though, and you'll have the fastest BMW currently in production

The M760iL's 6.6-litre twin turbo V12 engine develops 602bhp

0-62mph takes just 3.7 seconds in the M760iL, while its top speed is 189mph

Quad exhausts, blue brake callipers and aerodynamic tweaks mark the M760iL out aesthetically 

Most buyers look lower down the 7 Series range though, which is no great hardship

Options abound on BMW's online configurator, making it easy to inflate the 7 Series' list price

The 20-inch alloy wheels included with some trim levels make the 7 Series a little too firm over bumps
