The Renault Twingo is a city car with a difference, courtesy of its rear-wheel drive chassis

Like the Smart Fortwo, it's engine is in the back, making it an intriguing alternative to the Skoda Citigo

Sadly for keen drivers, this doesn't bless the Twingo with incredible handling, but it does give it a sharp turning circle

The Twingo doesn't lack rivals, with the Kia Picanto, Volkswagen up!, Toyota Aygo and Hyundai i10 all in contention

Engines range from a 1.0-litre petrol with 69bhp to a turbocharged 0.9-litre with 109bhp

The latter is fitted in the sporty GT model, with a 0-62mph time of 9.6 seconds that's quick for the class

Trim levels include Expression, Play, Dynamique and GT, with all but the entry-level version getting air-conditioning

Safety is reasonable too, with a four-star score from independent body Euro NCAP

The GT version has stiffer suspension for more grip and less body lean in corners
