If you're looking for comfort, then the C4 SpaceTourer is a great choice thanks to its soft suspension setup. Handling isn’t usually the biggest consideration for most people buying practical family cars, and the main downside of the C4 SpaceTourer’s comfortable ride is that its body leans quite a lot when cornering. This makes the Ford S-MAX a better choice if you’re interested in having a bit of fun with the car on a windy road every now and then.

The C4 SpaceTourer’s steering does react positively to driver inputs, but it’s not that communicative and the manual transmission doesn’t have a particularly nice action when you’re moving between gears.

Citroen C4 SpaceTourer diesel engines

The 99bhp BlueHDi 100 is certainly fuel-efficient, but it’s not particularly sprightly. It takes 12.7 seconds to get from 0-62mph and can feel wheezy, particularly when the car is fully loaded. We much prefer the 118bhp BlueHDi 120, which drops the 0-62mph time noticeably to 11.3 seconds and provides a more muscular feel that makes overtaking easier.

Both engines are pleasingly quiet on the road, particularly at cruising speeds. The range-topping BlueHDi 150 can crack 0-62mph in just under 10 seconds and is well suited to long, fast motorway journeys.

Petrol engines

The 1.2-litre 128bhp PureTech 130 petrol engine makes the C4 SpaceTourer feel quite nippy, with 0-62mph taking 10.1 seconds. It’s quieter than the diesels when you first start the car, but has a bit of three-cylinder thrum.

A less powerful 108bhp version of the same engine is only available in the entry-level Touch Edition model, with a reasonable 0-62mph time of 11.1 seconds. However, since this isn’t backed up by the pulling power of a diesel engine, it can feel a little overwhelmed on steep gradients if the car is fully laden.
