Audi has revealed its all-new, 296bhp, four-wheel-drive hot hatchback, the S3, which will debut at next week’s Paris Motor Show.
As with previous S-badged Audis, styling is discreet. The S3’s slightly flared wheel arches, subtle bumpers and unique alloy wheels are understated compared to the bodykits of the Vauxhall Astra VXR and Renaultsport Megane 265. The only hints at the car’s performance are the four exhausts at the rear.
It’s 60kg lighter than its predecessor, and, when fitted with Audi’s capable seven-speed DSG gearbox, the S3 is capable of going from 0-62mph in just 5.1 seconds. Opt for the six-speed manual and this increases slightly to 5.4 seconds.
The S3 should remain surefooted no matter the weather, too, as Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system is fitted as standard. The company also claims that the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol will return 40.9mpg.
Inside, the S3 gets a sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel and a turbo-boost pressure indicator on the rev counter. Body-hugging seats and dual-zone climate control are also standard.
UK prices for the S3 are yet to be confirmed, but Audi has revealed it will cost €38,900 when it goes on sale in Germany early next year. This suggests a price tag of around £30,000 on this side of the Channel.
