About average fuel consumption for the size of car and with 18,000 mile service intervals its not too bad to look after also, because its a Nissan, its reliable.

The car has been great in all aspects apart from the gearing ratios and the electronic braking. The gear box is six speed and is easy to use and select gears but the ratios mean that at 70mph in 6th gear the engine still runs at 2500rpm, Therefor rendering an extra gear useless in my view, surely it would be better to have the ratios set to lower the the rpm at 70 mph which would save fuel and the environment and it would also be a quiter ride. The electric braking has never caused any problems or failed in any way. However it is quite unnerving when it comes into play as it works with the traction controlit has a feirce noise and juddering, surely it can be smoothed out, this has only hapened when braking on cornersand i have to say it makes me jump every time. This aside i would still recomend this vehicle to any one. it is roomy comfy and and a beast.

It's the first car I've owned where the reliability has been amazing. As long as you keep the car topped up with the necessary fluids and change the filters and service according to recommendations, then it is fine. Only downside is that it seems to eat car batteries. (on my third battery now).

Spares and fuel costs are relatively high. Brakes are expensive, Tyres are nearly Ł200 each, Batteries are Ł120 each.

The perils of a large 4x4 - it's thirsty. We knew it would be but it wasn't the primary concern when choosing a car.

Tyres are expensive due to non standard size. Fuel costs keep rising which at 28mpg feels Nissan should build better engines.

Pahtfinder is very unrelyable and nissan dont seem to put much importance on customers,my car was new when i bought it and has had thousands of pounds worth of repairs done and it is only 2 years old. New clutch at 7000mls. and needs another at 14000mls. This costs £1200 a repair. Smokey noisy engine has had hundreds of pounds spent on it and still sounds like a tractor. These added to many more faults makes the pathfinder a must to avoid car.

Having owned a D40 Navara previously I was aware of what I was getting in to before I bought this, so all of the potential problems have now been sorted before they can cause any trouble. The absolute necessity is to get the timing chain replaced with a special duplex one, then remap the ECU and fit uprated front brake pads. You also need to keep a close eye on the chassis for signs of rust and treat accordingly. But now I have a fantastic vehicle that should last many years. The handling is quite reasonable for a vehicle of this size, the comfort and level of trim is excellent, the cargo/children space is nearly unsurpassed and the grip in muddy or mild off-road conditions is impressive. The remap improves the engine response and it's quite capable of 45mpg if you really try hard, although I usually get more like 36. About the only thing I don't like about it is the size of the rear passenger doors, as it makes access in some car parks very tight. I'd recommend to a friend, but with the advice to get one of the newer versions (>2010, Euro 5) and upgrade the necessary weak Nissan parts as soon as you can. Oh, and it has one of the best car forums around, so if you're in the mood to tackle maintenance and repairs yourself there's nearly unlimited help available.

As 4x4s go it's a bit rough and ready but for all-round ability and value it's great. Ok, the seats could hold you a bit better, it could be a bit quieter and the plastics a little less easy to mark, but it's still a better chuck-anything-you-like-in-the-back all rounder than a disco or a range rover. As it's not so "posh" you don't worry so much about little dinks and scratches. I get 33mpg which is good for it's size, but i'd like a little less road tax!!

Excellent value 4x4. Reviews constantly compare it to the Land Rover Discovery...but fail to point out the Pathfinder is half the cost! It is less refined than the Disco, but still great value for money. We've driven across Spain with ours twice going on several off road adventures and it hasn't put a foot wrong. It is also a first class towing vehicle for horse owners; we tow an Equitrek with two 15hh horses with ease. Boot space is immense, great for our big dog/bikes/horse gear etc etc...

Review
I bought this car in 2009 and have used it for everything from long distance trips (S. England to the Alps) through to short commutes to work and weekend shoots, it has been brilliant. MPG is pretty poor (ave 23-25) however, this remains constant even if the car is full to the rafters and carrying 5 adult passengers. Unsurprisingly it is excellent off road and first rate in the snow or wet, giving great confidence for winter driving. It can be a little agricultural with quite a noisy diesel however, the newer ones are a little more refined. The best endorsement, we've had no problems and at 86k have just traded it in and bought another one (brand new).

The pathfinder offers superb practicality and versatility with impressive levels of kit, comfort, safety and reliability. The pathfinder handles all road surfaces and weather conditions admirably. All in all the pathfinder is extremely good value for money and is extremely under rated.
