I enjoy putting reviews on Carbuyer about cars I've owned over the years so this review of the Audi TT roadster may come as a surprise. This was the first car I spent a large chunk of money on. A three year old Mk2 roadster from a Audi main dealer. I was so excited about owning this car that the reality of ownership just didn't live up to my expectations. Firstly the positive. The roof folds down quickly and on the move. The exhaust sounds good. The build quality and use of materials is both pleasing to look at and touch. Acceleration is brisk but not blistering. The car looks the business both roof up or down. Now the negative. I owned an immaculate Alfa Romeo GTV which I cherished and traded in for the TT. After about four weeks I longed for my Alfa back. Why? You ask. The Audi was boring. Even though the Alfa was a old design in comparison it excited you when driving. It had charm and character. It growled and and begged to be driven. The Audi was clinical and precise about everything it did but never made you feel as though you could have a good time. Rather like having a supermodel as a girlfriend but all she wanted to do was play scrabble. Hey I like scrabble but I can think of more exciting things to do. Even though build quality looked good on face value I had the car go back several times for squeaks and rattles. Also a broken roof and an issue with the engine starting and a problem with the fuel cap tarnishing. The dealer was very poor and I naively believed because I had spent a lot of money on a three year old car from a so called premium brand that I would be looked after like a prince after sales. All in all a huge disappointment and the Sat nav couldn't find its way out of a cupboard never mind guide you to the sea side. The TT also drank oil and had to be topped up about every three weeks. A friend of mine owns an A5 with the same motor which went to the engine graveyard in the sky after eighty thousand miles due to some oil problem. Luckily for him Audi UK agreed to help repair. I wouldn't have another that's for sure.

This is my second TT and both have been a pleasure to own. Only slight niggle was a loose inspection cover that had to be replaced after we noticed an increased amount of road noise a week after we picked up the car. Surprisingly economical, good value for money and 18 months without a single problem.

1 coil pack failed. Turned out there was a faulty set. Audi replaced all.

So far the Audi TT has been fine,one cold morning it took an age to start and then idled badly. I hadn't driven the car or over two weeks and after an hour the car was working fine.

The audi tts is a definate step in the right direction for the tt. It delivers much improved performance and the adittion of quattro allows it to be put down more effectively. The interior is of the standard you'd expect from an "s" model with full leather as standard, soft touch plastics and aluminium highlights. It has magnetic ride as standard which allow you to switc between sport and standard mode by adjusting the viscosity of the fluid in the dampers. I rarely drive in standard mode as it feels wallowy. Sport is left on for all but the crashiest of roads. Performance is impressive, with quoted 0-60 times of 5.4 seconds for the manual. It can however feel heavy and bogged down at times due to transmission losses through the quattro. In the midrange it doesn't feel as powerful as similarly engined fwd cars such as the golf gti ed30 or leon cupra. Finally, while the quattro does mean you can put power down earlier coming out of bends it sometimes seems to work against itself. On slick and uneven surfaces it sometimes feels as if the system is over reacting and makes the car feel unsettled. On the whole i am pleased with the purchase, however it hasn't quite lived up to some of the hype. Take a test drive before comitting. There are hot hatches of similar power which won't set you back as much and offer the same thrills.

Changing from merc slk to audi tt i was very pleasantly surprised at the level of comfort and driveability of the tt over the slk. On long journeys (glasgow - southampton) i arrived refreshed and having enjoyed the experience, enhanced by a good sound system, quiet ambient noise level and smooth response fron the engine.
