Audi TT Coupe (2006-2014): owner reviews

"Originally launched in 1999, it’s a testament to the design and engineering that the Audi TT is still the ‘must have’ small coupe. It’s as good to drive as it is to look at!"

Lets start with the only positive points, the car looks amazing, and has a comfortable driving position and sports seats. I found the rest very disappointing, though. I purchased what I thought at the time, was a very good looking top of the range model in excellent condition with low mileage – 25,000 for a 5 year old car, at a good price. I have now owned the car for 8 months and have already changed the tyres (which I was expecting) and the timing belt which was quite costly. Then it suddenly suffered a dashboard electrical failure, which was not covered by warranty and has had to be replaced resulting in a very costly bill. At the same time my car had this fault another two different Audis were also brought into the same garage with the same fault. I have now been without a car for 3 weeks and definitely will not be purchasing another Audi again.

I would say the performance of this car for the price you pay is outstanding. Fuel economy is also quite good if you do not put your foot down too much. I had the dynamic suspension on my version and when this was activated the car felt like it had no suspension and juddered round corners because of the lack of movement in the suspension. In standard mode the suspension was still hard. I did have one major problem with the TTRS which was at approximately 16000 miles the ECU just stopped working and had something like 17 faults. This meant the car went into Audi for over a week while they imported from Germany a new ECU, all done under warranty and a courtesy car during this time. No leg room in the back but that is not why you buy this car. I had the manual TTRS which if you had in dynamic mode the throttle was so sensitive it was not easy pulling off at traffic lights without stalling or looking like you were on the starting grid of a F1 race. I think the automatic would be better but they were not available when I bought the car.

Vorsprung durch Technik? What a joke! With the tagline that Audi uses, one would think that this is going to be an amazing car . . . It's not! I don't think that Audi has realised that we're in the 21st Century. Buy a cheap car like a Citroen or Renault, and you're sure to get automatic headlights, automatic mirrors, rear-parking sensors, cruise control, electronic displays, touch-screen interface, a start-stop engine . . . The kinds of tech that have existed for years? But of course, Audi is Vorsprung durch Technik, right? Wrong. Imagine going back to 1970, and that's the kind of car you get with an Audi TT: an outdated, uncomfortable piece of kit that is well overpriced for what you get. Do a 2-hour drive in this car and expect to feel like you've been on the road all day. Everything about this car is a disaster: The iPhone connector is in the glove-box, so you have to reach over every time you get in or out of the car, and you have to leave the glove-box open for the whole trip because if you close it, you can pretty much guarantee the cable will disconnect. Of course, the iPhone 5 & 5c/s have been out for over a year? Has Vorsprung durch Technik got an adaptor? No. You need to get one of those from Apple. Apart from all the omissions listed above, expect a display that's completely idiotic: a massive amount of room is devoted to an analog speedometer and rev counter, but don't fear! There's a *massive* 5cm (2 inches) digital readout on which to display your speed, warning lights (low fuel), phone book, song titles, etc. Yes: a whole 5cm! You can guess how much text fits on that? Just hope you don't run low on fuel. There's not much room for anything else! In the centre of the car is the infotainment system (non touch-screen, of course). Ensure you get a computer degree before attempting to figure it out, and beware of having an accident while trying to actually use it while driving! Why have a single button for things like ‘info’, ‘next’, ‘repeat’, etc when you can press a button, rotate a dial, and then select an option from a redundant menu (3 actions)? Surely trying to perform 3 actions instead of 1 makes sense while driving, right? Who needs to keep your eyes on the road. Voice control? It's there, but it doesn't work (you know it's bad when the Audi dealer tells you not to bother using it). Hideous, dowdy computer voice for Sat Nav? Check. Cluttered Sat Nav that makes it difficult to make out the roads? Check. Yep. If you wanted to find the worst designed, most idiotic, most outdated car, then congratulations! You've found it: the Audi TT. Vorsprung durch Technik? Laugh Out Loud!
