In over 40 years of motoring, and having driven a fair few cars in that time, this is far and away the best 'driver's' car I have ever had the privilege of owning. My wife and I bought it as a retirement present for ourselves. The plan has been that we will keep it until either I or the car expire, whichever goes first. The value is truly remarkable and, if you want one just because you think it will be fast (which in relative terms it isn't really) you misunderstand what the MX5 is all about. It is an icon, whatever Mark you own, with the occasional other owner flashing their lights or waving to you as you pass each other. It is that kind of car. Forget out and out speed. It's about the amazing roadholding and handling, the gearbox, the fabulous open top experience and the reliability and build. Once you get hooked you also discover the thought that has gone into the design over the years and, yes, it does put a smile on your face when you drive it. OK so it isn't terribly practical (though we could get a week's food shopping in the boot which is pretty good for the car's size) but we run it as a second car so that isn't an issue. What we do find very practical though is the electric folding roof; up or down in 12 seconds and a brilliant design. Would I recommend it? You bet I do. If you buy the car simply for the sheer driving pleasure you won't be disappointed.

The MX-5 is a car that my partner and I have always wanted. So we took the plunge and bought a 5 year old, low mileage 2.0 Miyako folding hardtop roadster. After less than 6 months of ownership she doesn't want anything else. I am inclined to agree. Anyone who is considering buying one stop considering and just do it. Never has a car made me as happy when driving as the little Mazda. I've owned many great driving machines over the years. Alfas, Audis, BMWs, even a Mk1 Golf GTI, but none have been as engaging as the Mazda MX5. It is a truly fantastic drivers car. For those idiots who label it as a hairdressers car you have no idea what you're talking about. The Mazda MX5 is probably the purist form of a sports car money can buy. Perfect weight distribution, sublime steering and handling. A gear change sweeter than sugar and a fizzy engine that spurs you on. Sure you could spend thousands more on a BMW Z4 or a Porsche Boxster and you'll be going a lot faster but trust me you won't be having anymore fun. My other car is a fairly powerful BMW. I love it but when getting out of it and climbing into the MX5 the Beemer feels clumsy and cumbersome. The MX5 makes you feel part of the car. It makes the dullest of journeys exciting. I always judge a car by if it makes you want to go out and buy milk. Sounds crazy but bear with me. You could have a fridge full of the stuff but you just pop out for some more because it's an excuse to go for a drive. The MX5 isn't a practical car although it has a boot big enough for a small shopping trip or a weekend away. What the MX5 is, it's an excuse to enjoy the pleasure of driving an excuse to go out and explore just for the hell of it. It's what cars should be about and it proves you don't need to spend super car money to own a truly super car.

Having owned a succession of sports cars, including Lotus, Ginetta and MG, I was reluctant to give up driving for fun, despite having reached pensionable age. I find the MX-5 is the perfect answer. The lack of straight-line speed is more than compensated for by the handling, especially on the roads here in the Highlands. I have had no mechanical issues to date.

Bought this convertible with 5,000 miles on it. Do not purchase this car if you want a luxury car. You sit very low there is a very stiff suspension. The steering is very direct and has a good feel. I have been over some very bumpy roads and sometimes you can barley even steer because you feel every crack in the road. It is fun to take around turns, however it is not fast like you may think. The engine sound is not the most confident. My BMW SAV could beat it in a race, But the handling makes up for all of that.

Good looking, but uncomfortable and impractical car which isn't as good to drive as the hype suggests. Traction control system limits acceleration, except in a straight limit and grip less impressive than a Mini. Synchromesh on 3rd gear was failing after 6000 miles

Japanese cars don't generally have reliability issues. This is my 3rd MX5 and love this 3rd generation model as Mazda has addressed issues as with previous models, that is road handling.
