The main reason you’ll choose the SEAT Leon ST over the hatchback is its larger boot, which grows from 380 litres to 587 litres. We should mention, however, that it’s 18 litres smaller than the Golf Estate’s boot and 23 litres short of the Skoda Octavia’s capacity – a result of the SEAT’s sleeker shape. The 660-litre boot in the Peugeot 308 SW is the current class leader. The good news is that SEAT has added features such as an adjustable boot floor that make the ST even more practical.

SEAT Leon ST interior space & storage

This Leon is bigger than the model it replaced and there’s plenty of space for five adults to sit. The wide-opening rear doors give excellent access to the back seat and there’s space in there for two six-footers – three if they don’t mind giving up their personal space. The middle rear-seat passenger will find his or her foot space is compromised by the car’s transmission tunnel, though.

Storage spaces include a large cooled glovebox, a sunglasses holder in the roof console and a lidded cubby between the two front seats, plus two cup-holders. All the doors have felt-lined pockets that stop things rattling around and are big enough to hold large bottles of water.

Boot space

The SEAT’s large boot opening means there’s lots of scope for loading in bulky items.

With the rear seats down, you get a maximum luggage capacity of 1,620 litres. It’s also a very usable space, with very little wheelarch intrusion and an adjustable boot floor. That floor can sit flush with the rear bumper to make it easier to slide heavy items in, or lowered for maximum capacity. All models also have roof rails that make it easier to mount a roof box for even more space.

Towing

Diesel versions of the SEAT Leon ST make the best tow cars in the range. The basic 1.6-litre model can pull up to 1,500kg – 200kg more than the entry-level petrol model and as much as any other petrol in the range. Of the two-wheel-drive Leon STs, the 2.0-litre diesels have the most pulling power, so they can safely tow up to 1,600kg. Note that the high-performance Cupra version cannot be fitted with a tow bar.
