The Audi A3 is the VW Group's most upmarket and expensive hatchback

As such, it goes up against premium models like the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes A-Class and Lexus CT

It's also available as a five-door A3 Sportback, four-door A3 Saloon and drop-top A3 Cabriolet

It shares parts with the Volkswagen Golf, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia, but all three have a distinct personality

This is particularly evident inside, where the A3 has arguably the nicest cabin quality in its class

There's also a high-performance S3 model with quattro four-wheel-drive and 306bhp

However, the most popular version is the 2.0-litre diesel thanks to its excellent economy

There's a 1.6-litre diesel too, with low emissions, but it's not as good to drive

Petrol engines start with an impressive 1.0-litre, but the 1.4 is an even better all-rounder

There's a 2.0-litre petrol too, but it's relatively niche owing to higher running costs

Choose the S line model and there's enhanced LED lighting at the front and rear

The Audi A3 handles well, but larger alloy wheels can upset the ride comfort

The dashboard has a minimalist 'wing-shaped' design and circular air vents

Sportier versions also get a flat-bottomed steering wheel and Alcantara trim

The entry-level SE trim gets a seven-inch infotainment screen which rises from the dashboard

Steering wheel-mounted controls are included as standard

Almost every version of the A3 is available with an S tronic dual-clutch automatic gearbox
