If you want a sporty SUV, the BMW X3 is one of the most fun to drive and fastest on sale Like many newer SUVs, it's not really intended for off road driving, with large wheels and firm suspension Its design is evolved from the larger BMW X5, to the extent it can be tricky to tell them apart unless they are together A broad engine range includes xDrive20d, xDrive30d and xDrive35d diesels with four-wheel-drive The interior is sturdy and uses pleasant materials, but is starting to feel slightly dated in places Most versions come with an automatic gearbox which suits the X3 and provides smooth shifts Thanks to its raised roofline, headroom in the front and back of the BMW X3 is excellent, as is kneeroom The boot offers 550 litres of luggage capacity, which matches the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC Flipping the rear seats forwards expands this to 1,600 litres, with a smooth loading lip and relatively flat floor Take a corner in the BMW X3 and there's hardly any body lean, particularly in the M Sport versions with sharper suspension But, running costs can still be affordable, with the xDrive20d able to return up to 55.4mpg With the Variable Damper Control system fitted, it's possible to choose between Comfort and Sport settings The 2.0-litre diesel xDrive20d will be fast enough for many drivers, getting from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds M Sport versions are fitted with 19-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension and a muscular body kit The BMW X3 achieved the maximum five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing and has six airbags as standard
