Chevrolet Orlando owner reviews

"The Chevrolet Orlando offers chunky looks, a comfortable ride and plenty of space, but it's the low price that'll attract most buyers."

Bought the Orlando after my Volvo V70 was written off by an uninsured driver, not expecting to keep it for any length of time. I needed a car that had 6 seats, reasonable running costs as a do 30,000 miles a year, and reliability. I have to say that in just over 4 years I am approaching 140,000 miles, and apart from a £15 boot switch, it has only required servicing and tyres, and been utterly reliable. It has also had some tough usage, as I live on a farm, and often drive down rutted un-tarmacced lanes, fill it up with straw, wood, heavy bags of feed, and various equestrian related bits and bobs, so I have been pleasantly surprised. On the minus side, it isn't terribly involving to drive, and the performance is merely adequate, but then that wasn't the purpose of it. Also, it has depreciated like a stone, but again, if I get a few more years out of it, the modest purchase price means it will still have represented good value overall. All in all, a positive ownership experience, and surprise at the capability of the Orlando.

I've owned my Orlando for almost two years now. Bought used at 15 months old with only 3,500 miles on the clock. I traded a Vauxhall Zafira for it, so not a great change. The Orlando has the same 1.8 engine as the Zafira and Astra, so a well-proven unit. Inside, I find the car fits the bill perfectly. Seats are comfortable, and easy to adjust for a comfortable driving position. The rear two seats are the best I have come across and my 6'1" nephew was very comfortable back there. My only gripe is the fiddly climate control unit. It requires a good week to accustomise with and it's not very intuitive. Even after nearly two years I still have to take my eyes off the road to adjust it. I'm sure it's very capable but I tend to just set it in the most used setting and then switch it on and off. The engine is a bit stressed on the motorway but quite capable and more quiet round town and on A roads. Despite some reviews I've read it is not underpowered. Steering and handling are what I would expect from a box on wheels, adequate, it is not a sports car. have had no reliability issues at all. All in all, a cheap, reliable people carrier with quite distinctive looks. There won't be many around because they're no longer available, so you'll get people looking at it.

I have owned the car for almost a year and a half now and have had no problems with it at all, I can say it is very comfortable to drive and there is plenty of room inside, my wife uses it for her work and we keep the pushchair in the boot for our 2 1/2 year old daughter with he work stuff, Driving on the motor way I have managed to get 54 mpg out it it which is pretty good, the out box box is ok but can be a bit indecisive on what gear it should be in some times.

I replace my Chevrolet Tacuma with the Orlando. My Tacuma was a very reliable car but being petrol engined, it was thirsty. I therefore went for the entry level LS trim diesel Orlando which is built in the same Korean factory. The higher spec models have more toys I guess but I don't need them and I am fine with steel wheels. Overall I am pleased with the Chevy. It is big and comfortable inside with sensible, practical seating configurations available. It's got good visibility and good seat adjustability to get a good view of the road. The fuel consumption does not come close to the manufacturers quotes figures. Typically, town driving 35mpg and motorway work 40mpg and I drive like a dad. The 130bhp turbo diesel has enough power but it has a narrow power band that can catch you out if you try and accelerate at the wrong rpm. Unlike other diesel cars I have driven, the power comes in quick and exits just as fast. Under 1200rpm there is nothing and by 2500rpm it's all over, so the power punch comes all in the middle. Because first gear is very low, you have to change gear quickly or run out of power suddenly, not good on a busy roundabout. I am now accustomed to the engine characteristics so driving is fine. The other point to note is that, like many cars these days, the Orlando is not fitted with a spare wheel in the UK. There is the facility to retro fit a genuine wheel carrier under the rear body but the carrier kit is ridiculously expensive from Chevrolet. Also, because the rear luggage area houses the two optional folding seats, there is no boot as such. With the seats folded there is a flat load area covered by a roller blind to keep out prying eyes. This flat area is covered in slippy carpet that allows cargo to slide about on cornering and braking unless strapped down, which is annoying. The Mp3 plug in point is also poorly positioned behind the radio panel - silly. Overall though, I am pleased with the Orlando as a good value people mover.
