Toyota Aygo X hatchback - Reliability & safety
Safety technology gets a significant boost and Toyota’s reputation for reliability is reassuring
Toyota is renowned for its strong reliability record and we can only hope the Aygo X will continue to uphold that. Most cars nowadays are plagued by the added complexity of hybrid and electric power, so the simplicity of the Aygo X’s petrol engine makes it seem quite traditional. Alongside a heap of standard safety equipment, this city car should, on paper, be stress-free to own.
Toyota Aygo X reliability
As a brand, Toyota ranked an impressive fifth out of 29 manufacturers in our 2021 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey; only 15.3% of owners reported a fault in the first year of ownership, praising their car’s low running costs and reliability. On the other hand, the previous-generation Aygo placed a disappointing 60th out of 75 models, with only average scores for reliability and build quality. While this is not necessarily representative of the new Aygo X, we can only hope that the change in underpinnings can see an improvement here.
Safety
Despite its compact size, the Aygo X looks to be one of the safest city cars you can buy. Standard safety equipment includes pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, emergency steering assist, lane-keeping assist and a reversing camera. Higher-spec cars also get front and rear parking sensors. Euro NCAP is yet to test the Aygo X, with the old model only scoring a middling three stars on their rigorous safety test. However, the new model should fare better thanks to its upgraded range of safety kit, with the Yaris on which it’s based scoring a full five stars.
