The GTE is Volkswagen's plug-in hybrid Golf
It offers by far the lowest emissions of the VW Golf range
This is makes it very attractive as a business car choice
It's a little less expensive than the BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class hybrids
However, it costs a lot more than a Golf GTD or even a GTI
Its name suggests performance, and its on-paper statistics say the same
0-62mph takes just 7.6 seconds, which is pretty quick and beats the diesel GTD
However, it doesn't feel like a GTI through the corners, as a consequence of its heavy batteries and electric motor
The latest version is identified by all-LED headlamps
The lower front bumper recalls the GTI
while subtle badging - in the GTE font - confirms its status on the sides...
...and at the rear.
The rear lamps have been updated with sequential indicators
There are twin exhaust-outlets like you'll find on the GTE
The dashboard is as well designed as any other Golf
An 'Active Info Display' instrument cluster is standard equipment
It displays different information depending on which driving mode is selected
The optional 9.2-inch Discovery Pro infotainment system with gesture recognition is a bit of a let down
