The Volkswagen Scirocco R is an attractive coupe with a powerful petrol engine

It's a direct rival to models like the Audi TT, Toyota GT 86, Nissan 370Z and BMW 2 Series

But, the Scirocco R is also likely to be in contention against hot hatches like the Ford Focus RS and SEAT Leon Cupra

Its 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine sends 276bhp to the front wheels through a manual or DSG automatic gearbox

The manual takes 5.7 seconds to get from 0-62mph - rapid acceleration for a front-wheel drive model

Large 19-inch alloy wheels and tyres ensure plenty of grip, while adjustable suspension is fitted as standard

An update in 2014 saw the Scirocco gain tweaked bumpers for a sharper and more modern look

At the front, this is most noticeable thanks to black spoilers surrounding the fog lights 

With such a potent engine, fuel economy suffers, and the Scirocco R can only manage around 35mpg

The boot is relatively spacious though, measuring 310 litres in volume
