The Honda CR-V has a long history, being one of the original small SUVs to hit the market

Over this time the CR-V has built up a reputation for being tough and reliable

But it also has more rivals than ever, including the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage, Renault Kadjar and Peugeot 3008

Its design is a subtle evolution of previous versions, but it's now bigger and more spacious than ever

Despite SUV styling, the suspension is tuned for road driving and most versions are front-wheel-drive

Our favourite engine is the 1.6-litre diesel with either a manual or nine-speed automatic gearbox

The 1.6-litre comes with 118 or 158bhp, with the entry-level version offering better value for money

It can return up to 64.2mpg and costs £140 in annual road tax

The Honda CR-V can get from 0-62mph in 11.2 seconds with 118bhp or 9.6 seconds with 158bhp

The SE trim level is well-equipped with a reversing camera, Bluetooth and folding door mirrors

Meanwhile, the EX trim is loaded with heated leather seats, a panoramic roof and powered tailgate

The CR-V has a very large boot, measuring 589 litres or 1,669 litres when the seats are folded flat

Top trim levels are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels

Despite feeling sturdy and well built, some of the interior materials feel a little cheap compared with rivals

The sat nav doesn't help in this regard, because it's an aftermarket system which looks rather dated

Despite dated graphics the infotainment system allows plenty of ways to connect a smartphone or music player
