Maserati inches closer to its all-electric future as the new Grecale Folgore hits the UK market
- Electric SUV with 550bhp
- Up to 311 miles of range
- Available to order now
All car makers are having to contend with the fast-approaching electric future and high-performance luxury brands are no exception – meet the Maserati Grecale Folgore. Designed to rival the new Porsche Macan, the Folgore is the Italian marque’s first foray into the expanding electric SUV market, and it’s now on sale in the UK alongside its petrol-powered twin.
The Grecale Folgore follows the sleek GranTurismo Folgore as the brand’s second electric vehicle. While the latter is a 751bhp, £180,000 super-coupe, the Grecale Folgore is neither quite as fast nor as expensive but is undoubtedly aimed at the premium end of the market, with a price tag well into six-figure territory.
What do I need to know about the Maserati Grecale Folgore?
The decision to offer the Grecale with a pair of electric motors is as much about performance as it is saving the planet. The Folgore sits on the same platform as its petrol-powered twin, but swaps the four or six-cylinder engine for a pair of electric motors and a battery. The result is the most powerful Grecale yet, with 550bhp – just 30bhp behind Maserati’s most powerful SUV to date, the Levante Trofeo.
With the front and rear axles each getting an electric motor of their own, the Grecale Folgore puts its power to the tarmac through all four wheels, completing a 0-62mph sprint in 4.1 seconds. Interestingly, that’s ever so slightly slower than the V6-engined Grecale Trofeo, presumably due to the added weight of the electric model’s battery pack.
It’s a big battery pack, too. Total capacity is 105kWh, enough for an official maximum range of up to 311 miles. Maserati claims that topping up the battery from 20-80% at a public rapid-charger should only take 29 minutes.
Air suspension is fitted as standard to all Grecale Folgores, and drivers will be able to switch between four driving modes, including Max Range, GT, Sport and Off Road.
What does the Maserati Grecale Folgore look like?
The exterior of the Grecale Folgore was first revealed in 2022 and is much the same as the regular Grecale, with identical mid-size SUV proportions. Most obvious is the largely blanked-off front-grille, although the traditional Maserati Trident still sits proudly in its centre. The lower air intakes found on the petrol-powered models have been replaced by new body-coloured trim pieces, while the triple side air vents above the front wheels now illuminate.
Grecale Folgore models get their own alloy wheel designs ranging from 19 to 21 inches, along with copper-coloured Folgore badges. There’s a new rear diffuser too, and of course, no exhaust pipes.
Inside the cabin, Folgore models get different upholstery options with unique embossed patterns for the seats. Only one Folgore model is currently offered, bringing plenty of kit, from a premium sound system to three-zone climate control and heated and ventilated front seats.
How much does the Maserati Grecale Folgore cost and when can I order one?
Prices for the Maserati Grecale Folgore begin from £109,905, making it the priciest model in the Grecale range. For comparison, the new electric Porsche Macan Turbo will cost from £95,000 when it reaches the UK.
The Grecale Folgore is on sale now in the UK with the first examples due to appear in showrooms in June. With a target to transition to a fully-electric lineup by 2030, we can expect to see many more Folgore models from Maserati in the near future.
