I bought the Rav4 Mark IV to replace a brilliant CVT petrol Auris as we needed something a bit bigger. It is comfortable, very spacious, quiet and so far reliable - it's great for the occasional long trip but used mostly for commuting which is the reason for choosing the petrol auto as we wanted to avoid DPF issues. It is pretty thirsty (average 36mpg on a run to Cornwall) but given the combination of petrol/auto/AWD in a large-ish SUV it was expected.The powered boot I felt was a bit gimmicky but has been useful albeit a bit slow. Downsides are very minor being that the Sat nav is a bit slow to load and that there is only one 12v power point in the car (in the dashboard), I found this strange in a large family car since the smaller Auris (also a Toyota) had three (dash, rear and boot). This doesn't spoil an otherwise excellent car and I wouldn't hesitate recommending one.

Only ever llet me down once and it was my fault - I left the window open and water got into the electrics of the speedo and I had to replace it. Greenflag reccommendered it to be allowed to dry out in a garage but dealership insisted on replcing speedo which immediaely conked out again as the system was still damp. I do not hink diagnostic advice given here was correct as the car needed drying out and another replacement speedo fitted.. It was expensive for me when it should not have been.

It has never let me down. In over 9 years the only repairs needed have been a new auxiliary drive belt, a couple of oxygen sensors and new front brake discs.

This is the third RAV I've owned from new. I've had no problems at all with any of them. The fuel consumption is not great round town but fine on long runs. It's great in snow & rain. Covered by a service plan so it's always serviced at ourlocal Toyota Dealership who always give fantastic service. The only slight annoyance is the Sat Nav which is fine if you know post code but difficult to find points of interest.

The Rav4 is a great car to own and drive. Most of the motoring jounalists are very negative towards the Rav4. In the real world the Rav4 delivers. The expert reviewers judge their favourite cars on driving dynamics, which is great while driving on the limit or on a race track. The Rav4 is comforable and practical while some of it's competition are unreliable and uncomfortble. I'll hold onto the Rav4 for a lon time.

This Toyota RAV4 was purchased as a replacement for the current most popular SUV, a Nissan Qashqai. The difference between the two is enormous, contrary to all the opinions of the critics who appraise and test cars for the scrutiny of the motoring public. Something is not quite right when owners rate the RAV4 highly and rate the Qashqai poorly, yet critics have the opposite opinion!? In the real world motorists want reliable, economical, well built cars. The Qashqai is not, according to the terrible owner reviews. I have returned to a Toyota because, having owned four Toyotas previously with not one problem, I am totally happy with my car and have that confidence and peace of mind. The RAV4 is not the best looking SUV out there but it has huge history and character and many owners keep their vehicles for years and years. As regards the model I have purchased, its a MkIV . A new model (petrol hybrid) is due at end of year. The RAV4 is extremely easy to drive and very comfortable. All the controls and switches are easy to reach and the Bluetooth and DAB radio are excellent. The climate control is neat and tidy, simple to use and not over elaborated. Gearchange is smooth and quiet and the clutch not too firm or soft. The steering is absolutely adequate for the normal driving habits of drivers. For those drivers who wish to push their RAV4 a bit harder and faster around corners then it is obviously not going to feel as good as a BMW. The diesel is not the quietest on cold start up and idle but when warmed up is much quieter and cabin noise is minimal. This is the fourth Toyota 2-litre diesel engine I have had and mpg has been good, real world average 45mpg. The suspension around town and over more uneven surfaces is much softer than some SUVs, such as the Qashqai which is far too firm over uneven surfaces and aggravated my back problems. The RAV4 cruises effortlessly on the motorway and the 2-litre diesel has plenty of torque to get out of any situation. Contrary to some reviews on these Toyota models I find it difficult to see why the engines are considered weak? From experience the more miles you do, as with any diesel engine, the better the engine performs. Toyota has not equipped this model with an e-handbrake which together with the h.S.A is a much user friendly system than on the inconsistent Qashqai and a space saver wheel is now supplied as standard. The cabin and boot are enormous and rear passengers are spoilt for legroom together with reclining seats. The power tailgate seems an unecessary luxury, but hey ho! On a really wet stormy day rushing out of the supermarket I am sure with the boot open ready to take the bags of shopping for a quick get away it will prove its usefulness. As far as bad points go, not many. The Icon version of this model does not get sat nav with 'touch and go ' which seems odd for a vehicle of this spec. The retractable mirrors switch is not illuminated and it is difficult to locate in the dark. So this RAV4 was purchased by me after considering and driving other alternatives, including Mazda CX-5, but it still came down to confidence in the reliability (plus 5yr warranty) and the price I paid to get that spec vehicle. The longer you own and drive one of these vehicles the more attached you get! I highly recommend the Toyota RAV4 to anybody considering purchasing an SUV.

Apart from normal wear and tear (battery replaced / brake discs replaced) only minor issue was a rocker gasket leaking. fixed by dealer in under 2 hours!

Don't be fooled, the Toyota RAV 4 is much more a 4x4 than a crossover. It's smooth, comfortable, economical and well behaved on tarmac or when the going gets rough. Large haulage capacity, drives like a car, and it's comfortable. It has good lights for night driving. It has bo frills - functional, honest, reliable - what more do you need?

Purchased my Rav4 in September of last year (2014) and really love driving the car. I drive to various locations around the Cambridgeshire area and find it really nice to drive and takes the country corners really nicely. Fuel is a bit of an issue if you are only driving short distances but for long distances (which I do) I find the fuel consumption not too bad. Have found two quirks so far, 1: does not like having a window shield on to protect from the ice (the ones you leave on your car overnight) as it kept on setting the car alarm off and 2: if you don't close the fuel cap correctly the 'check engine' light will come on! Frightened me to death when the 'check engine' light came on until I realised why.

For the first 2 years I had no qualms about the car's reliability,it had 26k on the clock when bought, it now has 93k on the clock. But in in the last 2 years it has caused problems and don't feel like driving it long distances. Car has now developed a problem whereby it can suddenly lose acceleration for no reason! Garage did try it out and did not find problem but it was suggested that it could be dirty diesel.

Best car I have ever owned. I part-exchanged a Mercedes C Class for it as I found it unreliable, Toyota's service department is alway helpful and do what they say they will do, I've also owned a Land Cruiser which was brilliant.
