Excellent cruiser. 2.0d pulls very well considering the size of the car and the economy is excellent. The use of technology is very impressive. I find the satnav link to google maps invaluable. Overall i have been very impressed with this car.

I love this car, it has everything you could possibly want. It's fast, luxurious, comfortable, reliable, has masses of space and does not cost a lot to maintain as long as it is looked after. I have had it for five years now and whilst I have looked at other cars to replace it, so far I have found nothing that compares. Looks like I am going to be driving this car until it dies of old age.
What's the one thing you like most about your car?
The sheer pleasure of driving it.
If you could improve one thing, what would it be?
I wish it had a wiper on the back window.

I purchased my GT eleven months after first registration so is one of the first ones made - does not have the latest additions like DAB radio. The SATNAV needs upgrading but haven't figured out how to do it. The car is easy to drive - point and press. I was quite happy with the car until the last eighteen months when this car has started costing me a lot of money. I am the sole driver and the car has rarely had a rear seat passenger. The first significant cost was when I opened my car and the rear o/s electric window went down by itself. I push the button for it to go back up but to no avail even though I could hear the motor turning. In short took it to the garage and I had to have the cradle replaced to the tune of £360. About five weeks later the same thing happened on the rear n/s window which I had to replace to the tune of £360. No one sits in the rear of my car. I really dislike the run flat tyres, I have had a quite a few changed at £270 a piece. I have sought advice about replacing them and have been advised against changing them for anything other than the run flats. I've had a massive oil leak which needed a 'head' of sorts changing. That was done at a great cost This week I was informed I need to replace at least one of the electrical spark plug, the head where these plugs go into. I am now starting to think time to change this car. Not sure I want another BMW because I feel BMW give their customers a very raw deal but I'm not sure what to replace it with. I previously had a 2008 Z4 roadster which was great but I needed a larger car for work.

I bought this car a year ago with 52K on the clock, the main reason was to tow a new caravan and I couldn't afford a BMW 5 Series Touring. The car had a full service history and was full loaded with every toy possible except the most important one: the rear camera. I contacted BMW about a tow bar to be told don't really recommend towing caravans with this car, strange as they show the towing weights in the handbook - maybe it's an image thing. The price for parts only was £1,800 plus labour, bemused I asked for a break down to be told I would need to upgrade the cooling system along with adding a bit of metal on the back. I bought one from my local fitter for £400 and guess what it's fine, doesn't overheat and pulls like a train. One issue so far N/S rear suspension air bag split and deflated still got me home some 60 miles. BMW quoted £800 to repair, went on BMWLAND where another owner had document the issue, I bought the unit direct from Germany £179 and fitted it in under an hour with 2 jacks one flat end screw driver and a 10m socket. It is a common problem with all BMW air suspension especially on the N/S due to rubbish from the kerbside. This is a lovely car to drive returning 36mpg and 24 towing. Would I pay £60k new? NO way, but for £18K what more could you want other than a rear camera. You do have to watch the rear tyres on 19", there was problems with the original tyres but Pirelli have no issues with theirs.

For a bmw the problems that have occured and the rectification at dealership is not always as effective as expected. Gearbox fault took 7 months to rectify! Other electrical faults have appeared, which seem to be common when researched on forums!

Fantastic fast family state, with generous room for the whole family, good performance and economy for the engine size, plus segment leading low emissions. The car is let down by run-flat tyres; they increase the cost of ownership, plus spoil the ride.

Very poor reliability for a premium car. Very poor dealer service. No engine temperature gauge, poor indicator control, extremely poor climate control, and take ages (20 miles) to produce hot air in the winter. Excessive fuel consumption after spark plug replacement by main bmw dealer. No electrical socket in front if you don't opt for smoker's pack, and dealer did not warn about this. Dunlop tyres needed replacement after 18,000 miles.

Superbly comfortable, raised ride height makes entry/exit easy for older people and also gives better visibility in traffic. Small rear window makes reversing more difficult, but rear camera helps. Huge amount of cabin space due to vehicle being built on 7 series platform plenty of rear seat legroom even with tall driver, adjustable rear seats a bonus for rear passengers. Handling acceptable for such a large car and ride is so comfortable. The only thing I can fault it on is fuel consumption which never gets anywhere near BMW claimed figures; around 33 mpg for local driving and motorway cruising at 74mph only gives up to about 38mpg well short of the claimed 53mpg, whereas the 520d saloon I previously owned claimed 61 mpg and regularly gave 54mpg on similar motorway journeys. When I tackled BMW about this car reaching only 71% of claimed figure wheareas the 520d saloon achieved 88.5% of the claimed figure they waffled and when I told them that as a professional engineer I considered their response to be waffle, the matter was referred to head office who also failed to give any sort of satisfactory answer as to the reason for the disparity. That is my only real complaint if they claimed 45mpg under test conditions I feel that they would be being honest, but 53mpg is pure fantasy, or maybe VW type testing? The car has been completely reliable and is a joy to drive though I would have hoped for the genuine fuel consumption to be in the low 40's instead of the high 30's which everyone else seems to achieve. At the end of a 300 mile journey I always feel as fresh as when just driving to the local shops, the panoramic sunroof is also a bonus. Another small gripe is that is nowhere to store my skinny spare wheel kit which fits under the boot floor in a 5 series saloon, even with runflats, I prefer to change a puncture rather than driving many miles on the sidewalls of a deflated tyre.

Comfortable, fast and comes with lots as standard. Wannabe F1 drivers should look elsewhere but the ride is decent enough and the raised driving position makes it easy to get in and out of. There's acres of room in the back and the panoramic roof makes the interior really light and airy.

The car has not had any mechanical faults but has produced excessive rear tyre wear of a potentially lethal nature. This is apparently due partly to run flat tyres and majorly to incorrect chassis geometry settings.

A huge disappointment, not just the car, but the dreadful lack of customer interest from bmw uk. They are arrogant and disinterested in the extreme. Really, munich should fire the lot of them. It is the disgusting handling of our problems by bmw uk which has really got me. The car i could excuse, but their disinterest and at times abuse is inexcusable. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful

Not quite perfect but a superb car which exceeds expectations and is fantastic value in 520d. The new 8 speed auto is fantastic and the 2.0d feels much bigger than its size. Average economy at 40mpg is not as good as advertised, but sill excellent for this size of car.

I bought my car at the end of last year(2014) I bought it with around 30,000 miles. This was above average for a 2 year old car. Recently the suspension springs broke. I took my car to my local BMW dealer and was provided With a bill of £450 to replace and fit the part. BMW parts have always been expensive but this was rather too expensive.

This is second BMW 5 series. The car itself is comfortable and room and a nice drive. It will probably be my last. There was a problem with back door soon after I bought it. It would open on its own. BMW corrected problem electrical fault. Airbags in both rear suspension gone, at £400 each plus labour within a few months of each other. Funny just after 4 years and 63,000 miles. BMW dealer where I bought it said pot holes do that to it. I have not encountered that many pot holes. Last car had a problem with fumes from tank into that car. The customer care is disgraceful from BMW. They can keep their biscuits and choices of coffee and provide helpful less arrogant employees. Our other car Jaguar and before that a Mercedes. We never had any trouble with either of those. And customer care superior. I will be taking my money elsewhere next time. A company is only as good as its product and the people who work for them.

Dissapointing and very costly to run. Needlessly over complicated computer systems require constant attention or regular ignoring on my part.
