New MG Cyber GTS Concept reimagines the Cyberster as a stunning hardtop coupe
MG celebrates its centenary in style with a new Cyberster-based concept car
- Two-door coupe concept car
- Based on the MG Cyberster
- Revealed alongside EX181 concept and new MG HS
The 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed is in full swing and MG may have just stolen the spotlight with the new MG Cyber GTS Concept. Based on the newly-released MG Cyberster, the Cyber GTS Concept takes the electric two-door, two-seater package but replaces the folding soft top with a fixed hardtop – and it’s quite the looker.
The MG Cyber GTS Concept has been unveiled as part of MG’s 100-year anniversary, alongside the EX181 concept and new MG HS SUV. The MG of today couldn’t be any more different to the MG of 1924, however, with its new Chinese ownership transforming the brand into a frontrunner in the affordable EV market.
What do I need to know about the MG Cyber GTS Concept?
The MG Cyberster was already a handsome machine, but the Cyber GTS Concept is arguably even prettier. Using the 1968 MGC GTS Sebring race car as inspiration, MG’s designers have sculpted a sleek coupe roof for the Cyberster, in place of its usual folding canvas soft top. Bar the roof – and a new GTS badge on the tail – the exterior styling is unchanged from the Cyberster, but that’s no bad thing in our eyes.
We don’t know any specific technical details for the MG Cyber GTS Concept beyond its rear-wheel drive layout, but it’s safe to assume that it uses the same electric hardware as the Cyberster Trophy. That would mean a single 335bhp motor connected to a 77kWh battery, compatible with rapid charging up to speeds of 150kW. In the Cyberster, that’s enough poke for a 0-62mph time of 5.0 seconds flat, while range stands at 316 miles.
Can I buy an MG Cyber GTS Concept?
As much as we’d like to see the MG Cyber GTS Concept on a showroom floor in the near future, there’s no word yet on whether it will reach production or not. MG says that the Cyber GTS Concept “explores the further potential for MG creating a new future for a GTS model in the EV era”, so the possibility exists, even if it’s not confirmed. If MG does decide to greenlight the Cyber GTS Concept for production, it would be the first hardtop sports car from the brand since the 2003 XPower SV – not to be confused with the electric MG4 XPower.
Alongside the Cyber GTS Concept, MG has revealed its latest production model, the MG HS SUV. Available with either petrol or plug-in hybrid power, the HS will be the largest car in its lineup, delivering up to 70 miles of range in PHEV guise. The MG EX181 was also shown off at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, although it’s safe to assume that this one-seater, race car-inspired concept car won’t be available at your local MG dealer anytime soon.
