All-new MG HS aims to “disrupt the market”
An entirely new replacement for the MG HS is on the way, offering petrol and plug-in hybrid engines from launch
- Mid-size SUV with new exterior and interior styling
- 70-mile electric range for PHEV model
- Full reveal on July 11th
There’s an all-new MG HS headed our way, joining a slew of recent new models from the Chinese brand, and we’ve been given a small teaser before its full unveiling. The mid-size SUV is getting a complete overhaul as it moves into its second generation, bringing a new exterior design and an impressive electric range that could shake up the affordable plug-in hybrid market.
2024 has already seen the launch of the new MG3 hatchback and the stunning Cyberster sports car, not to mention the hugely popular MG4 EV that hit our roads a couple of years ago. The HS is the biggest car in its lineup and should deliver a more practical offering for family car buyers when it launches later this year.
What can we expect from the new MG HS?
The MG HS competes in the mid-size SUV segment alongside big sellers like the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. Like those South Korean models, the HS will be offered as both a traditional petrol model and a plug-in hybrid from launch. A self-charging hybrid is expected to join the lineup at a later date, giving buyers a trio of options to pick from.
While technical details for the petrol engine are currently under wraps, it’s been suggested that the plug-in hybrid model could have a much larger battery than the outgoing car, and will be capable of an electric range of up to 70 miles as a result. That would represent a mighty improvement over the old HS, which can only manage 32 miles before the petrol engine whirrs into life. A range of 70 miles would have the added benefit of dropping the HS into the 5% Benefit-in-Kind tax band for business drivers.
That range figure would be enough to embarrass both the Tucson and the Sportage plug-in hybrids – neither of which can crack 50 miles – and place the HS in the same league as the Mercedes GLC 300 e.
Teaser images of the MG HS give us our first glimpse into its new styling. There’s a clear view of its SUV proportions in profile, with a gently sloping roofline and a new shape to the side windows. The rear image clearly shows off the new full-width light bar, while the front appears to be dominated by a large front grille with new air intakes on either side, similar in style to the MG3. MG hasn’t given us any clues about the interior yet, other than claiming it will feature “enhanced space and an array of new, driver-focused technology”.
Pricing is still under wraps, too, but we wouldn’t expect the new HS to cost vastly more than the outgoing model, which currently starts from around £24,000 in petrol guise and £31,000 for the plug-in hybrid. The MG HS will be revealed in full on July 11th at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
