All aboard! Tesla Model Y finally available with seven seats
Tesla’s best-selling SUV just got even more versatile, thanks to an extra pair of seats
- Seven-seat option for Tesla Model Y SUV
- Only available for Long Range All-Wheel Drive model
- Costs an additional £2,500
The Tesla Model Y has proven to be one of Europe’s favourite electric SUVs since it arrived in 2022, and the introduction of a new seven-seater option will only broaden its appeal. On sale now, the seven-seat interior option is a £2,500 extra for the Long Range All-Wheel Drive model, bringing its total cost to £54,490.
North American customers have been able to order a seven-seat Model Y since order books first opened, but only now has the option become available to buyers on the other side of the pond. Several new electric seven-seaters have arrived in recent months, including the Kia EV9, Peugeot E-5008 and Volvo EX90, proving that there is a market for such a car over here. Now that the Tesla Model X is no longer offered on our shores, the Model Y will be the American brand’s sole seven-seater to compete against those newcomers.
How big are the rear seats in the Tesla Model Y seven-seater?
We don’t have any precise measurements for the Tesla Model Y’s third row of seating, but they’ve been squeezed under the rear glass without any changes to the bodywork. Given that the Model Y has a fairly dramatic sloping roofline, they’re unlikely to be as spacious as the seats in something like a Kia EV9 or Hyundai Santa Fe, but they should still be large enough for children.
The seats themselves fold individually, taking up a small amount of boot space compared to the regular Model Y when not in use. Cargo volume stands at 753 litres with the rear row folded, which is less than both the EV9 and E-5008, but more than the EX90.
Getting in and out of the rear seats is made easier thanks to the buttons mounted on the headrests of the outer middle-row seats. With a press, the second row of seats will slide forward and fold automatically. That sliding bench should also make it possible to create some extra legroom for the rearmost passengers. Once seated in the rear pair of seats, passengers have a cup holder each, plus two USB-C outlets for keeping devices charged up.
Can I have any Tesla Model Y with seven seats?
Unfortunately not. As is the case for the North American market, the seven-seat interior option is limited to just the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive. That means that the new, cheaper Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive – with its lengthy 373-mile range – will miss out on the extra seats. Still, the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive is rated for 331 miles of range and an impressive 4.8-second 0-62mph time.
Prices for the Model Y Long-Range All-Wheel Drive start from £51,990, which increases to £54,490 if you tick the £2,500 option box for the seven-seat interior. Customers in the UK can place an order now and should receive their Model Y before the end of the year.
