Audi A5 Sportback hatchback (2009-2016): owner reviews

“The Audi A5 Sportback is due to be replaced soon, but its saloon-like practicality and coupe-style good looks still appeal.”

Audi's DSG auto gearbox and modern electrics are good – the tyre pressure monitoring has has saved me. I don't like the electric dipstick which shows if oil needs to be added but doesn't say how much. The manual states 0.50 Litres but I would like it to measure the oil level well before, perhaps with a gauge on the screen so it can become part of a weekly check. My previous A4 could check all the lights, oil, computers, and battery state with the press of one button – this car only can check one item only at a time. The tailgate lifts higher than my garage door, it would be good if you could set how far it opens. Water runs from the tailgate into the boot if it's open when it's raining, too. Mine is an automatic with sports mode and a manual override – I only drive it in automatic mode as that's what an automatic is for.

Beautiful well built car. My first Audi but not my last. Recently drove 700 miles mainly on motorways and achieved 54 mpg, regularly drive 12 miles to work on a roads etc and acheive over 60 mpg. Although a diesel can cope with any situation as drives well and can soon build a head of steam.

I do not know how audi reached 31 mpg combined for this car. Way off even the 10% less rule of thumb. 99% of the time I don't drive the car fast and even then I get an average of 22.8mpg combined. Frequently get 18.5, yes 18.5 average mpg, in progressive town driving and 15-18mpg in winter in town. This is Bentley territory! Even stupidly slow on a motorway, e.g. 55-60 mph, for 80 miles, the very best I've got is 28.5 (audi claims 40!!). Very disappointed- the official mpg is too far off in my opinion. I invite audi to drive my car anytime to prove the car can get even 27 mpg combined with normal (not snail-like) combined driving. I will eat my words if so but I'm confident. Audi, please quote real world mpg or people like me will switch brands...

+Still a head turner in SE trim. +Very smooth and comfortable ride. +Engine is quiet and economical, but has enough torque to manoeuvre comfortably on the motorway. +Cabin is well laid out and uses quality materials. +So far no mechanical or electrical problems. +Will do about 500 miles on a £75 tank if you drive sensibly. +Did I mention how pretty the car is? Pillar less doors and flowing lines... -Audi are stingy with the options, it can feel a bit basic compared to most modern cars. -Paint had an "orange peel" effect in places upon delivery. -Steering feels a bit disconnected. -Front end was a bit hard to judge at first. -Low clearance means you need to be extra careful on unkept or high speed bumps. It is worth paying extra for an S-Line model. You get the Xenon/LED lights which look amazing, more stylish wheels, better seats and now navigation as standard (usually a £1500+ option) All of which you will be kicking yourself for missing out on as they are difficult and expensive to retrofit.
Reliability

5 out of 5

So far no issues mechanical or electrical after a year of ownership and 10,000 miles.
Performance

4 out of 5

Reasonable for the engine size. The 177 TDI model pulls effortlessly on the motorway and can overtake most cars with ease.
Running Cost

5 out of 5

£75-85 for a full tank of diesel which will do about 500-550 miles. The engine is capable of hitting 50mpg with ease on long journeys (my record is currently 57).

The car is less than 1 year old and has had a seal leak which put water on to the parking brake control unit, which then had to be replaced. The first thing the technician said to me when I dropped off the car was "had it been raining". Not the quality I had expected when buying from Audi.

Fuel consumption better than most for size of engine and where driven considering it is petrol. Piston rings needed to be changed to resolve oil consumption issue after one year.

It hasn't broken down - but then a car less than two years old with a premium price tag shouldn't. There are a few minor niggles though, such as the windscreen washer jets which the dealer can't seem to get right. Plus the car is losing oil.
Running Cost

1 out of 5

Audi rip you off by charging much more for the same parts that go into other VAG vehicles from VW, Skoda and SEAT. Also the servicing is very expensive, and they cut corners for which the CUSTOMER pays - e.g. fitting a timing belt which is an expensive job to change, instead of a timing chain which is sealed for life.

Was expecting a little better consumption (having stop/start feature). Typically get about 380 miles or 450 when doing motorway driving.
