Vauxhall Mokka X SUV (2012-2019) - Practicality & boot space

It can’t claim to be the best in class, but the Vauxhall Mokka X is pretty practical

Because it’s a relatively tall SUV crossover, the Vauxhall Mokka X is significantly more practical than the Vauxhall Corsa supermini on which it’s based. The seating position is pretty upright and commanding, while there’s good all round visibility thanks to the large windows and mirrors. It’s significantly easier to see out of than the Peugeot 2008, for instance, which has pronounced windscreen and door pillars that can obscure your view when pulling out of tight junctions.

Vauxhall Mokka X interior space & storage

Being based the Corsa does mean there are a couple of limitations, though. Firstly, while Vauxhall’s engineers and designers have done a good job of maximising headroom, there’s only so much they can do about the Mokka X’s relatively compact shape. Three adult passengers sitting in the back, for instance, will find their shoulders rubbing together, while legroom is tight in the back for grownups, though children and those of a smaller stature should be fine there.

Still, considering part of the Mokka X’s appeal is the fact it’s small enough to be an easily manoeuvrable town car, it’s to be expected that the amount of interior space on offer isn’t comparable to that of a full-size SUV, for example. Elsewhere, practicality is good inside thanks to the large glovebox and doorbins and the presence of plenty of thoughtful storage areas and cubbyholes.

Boot space

While Renault has been able to squeeze 455 litres of boot space into its Clio-based Captur, the Mokka X is about 25% down on outright load capacity in comparison. The Mokka X’s 356-litre boot is an average size and sits quite high in the car, so you’re forced to hoik things up a little when loading. At least the 60:40 split-folding rear seats lie nice and flat when dropped, and there’s very little boot lip to lift things over.

Towing

The Mokka X can pull up to 1,200kg when fitted with a petrol engine or 1,500kg when fitted with a diesel.
