Review
I was given a VW Golf for work as my meetings span the length and breadth of the country. The driving experience is excellent but I am having some real difficulty when it comes to sleeping. A few issues I have encountered are: The seat – it only reclines to about 45 degrees which is comfortable for about 30-45 minutes but when I’m looking to power through and get a few hours of shut eye I find the seat quickly becomes uncomfortable. I have had to lie across the back seat on a couple of occasions which is fine but also increases the risk of fines when I am sleeping in car parks/permit holder areas. Noise isolation – extremely noisy even with all windows closed (which can get hot especially in the midday heat). Motorway services present a lot of problems with a lot of cars passing by as well as the noise of the actual motorway. I have had to resort to wearing earplugs but this has proved problematic when police have tried to wake me if I’m parked on someone’s driveway or commercial premises. Driving – 5 stars Sleeping – 1 star Overall 3 stars

Quite simply, in 30 years of motoring the best car I've ever owned or driven. Smooth, quiet, comfortable (though not the rear seats). Fast enough when you need it, supremely economical the rest of the time. I easily average 52 mpg in winter, 57 mpg in summer, people who say otherwise don't know how to use the superb DSG to best advantage. It tows a 5 berth caravan with aplomb, touring Europe for 4,000 miles in 2013 without ever using toll roads. It will soon be 6 years old. I don't intend to chop it in until it's beyond economic repair.

I cant deny the golf gti is a brilliant car to drive. It looks awesome in tornado red and gets great looks from other drivers. I love the retro details, ie tartan seats, red stripes on grill and even the lovely 18" monza alloys. Sadly i have been to the garage 8 times in 17 months with everything from a "body creak" to rattles in all the doors, bootlid, door pillar trim (twice) plus a broken arm rest. It's been a nightmare and has spoiled an otherswise brilliant piece of engineering. I owned a mark 5 gti and it was only in the garage twice in 3 years. The current car is not built like vw's should be!!! I have given up on beating all of the rattles, the garage and i are on first name terms its been in so often! I would love another gti, but only if vw could get the interior built quality up to the standards i expect from a german car costing me over £26,000! Come on volkswagen, you can do better than this!

Car has had new windscreen (delaminated), new exhaust sensor and new headlight switch. horrendous wheel rumble at 20mph forums suggest this is a problem vw know about and is only curable by replacing tyres (£ 145 each...I Do't think so!!) I may think before ticking the big wheels box next time. Above work carried out all at once at 17k / 18mnths old all under warranty

Very pleased with the performance and quality of ride and build, slightly disappointed that i had teething problems with a brand new car especially from a german manufacturer. The main dealer was very helpful and patient, the only downside was the salesman failed to return phone calls which i consider bad manners and very unprofessional.

It is a reliable, practical work-horse. The build quality has proven to be very good and it does not look or feel like the ten year old, 100k mile car that it is. The very low running costs, reliability and almost non-existent depreciation make it diffcult to justify upgrading it for something newer.
