Skoda Superb review – MPG, running costs & CO2 emissions

“The Superb comes with efficient petrol and diesel engines, but it’s a shame the PHEV isn’t offered”

The Superb comes with a range of petrol and diesel engines, but you’ll need to opt for the Superb Estate if you want a plug-in hybrid. It’s a significant move because for now at least the Skoda Octavia isn’t available with a plug-in variant either, giving the Superb Estate and electric Skoda Enyaq SUV a leg up for company car choosers after low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates.

The petrol and diesel engines that are offered should still align rather nicely with the sort of customers likely to be interested in the Superb. The 1.5-litre TSI e-TEC mild hybrid will no doubt appeal to private buyers thanks to its entry-level pricing and impressive 50mpg+ efficiency.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine offers the most performance, but fuel economy takes a big hit. For a comfy cruiser like the Superb, we don’t think that’s a worthwhile trade-off. Only Superb L&K models are available with the 2.0-litre engine anyway (you can’t get one with the 1.5-litre), so it’s another reason to avoid this pricey trim level.

The 2.0 TDI, meanwhile, manages slightly better economy for long-distance drivers, and it’s also likely to appeal to drivers who need to tow heavy loads. During our in-depth test of the 148bhp diesel Superb, fuel economy settled in the high 40s over a mixture of roads. It proved even more efficient on the motorway, hitting 60mpg. Both of those figures are impressive for a large family car.

How much will the Skoda Superb cost in tax?

The Skoda Superb costs the standard annual rate for VED (road tax) until you get to the more potent diesel engine with four-wheel drive in SE L trim, which pushes over the £40,000 mark. This brings with it an additional ‘luxury car’ surcharge in the first five repayment years.

What will the Skoda Superb cost to insure?

We haven’t seen the insurance groups for the new Superb just yet, but the previous model was positioned in groups 20 to 28. With similar engines this time around, these are likely to stay fairly similar, keeping it in similar territory to the Peugeot 508, and well below the likes of the BMW 5 Series in group 37.
