Next Vauxhall Astra to get sleek new look

The new Vauxhall Astra will get the brand’s ‘Vizor’ design, all-new technology and electrified powertrains

  • New Astra to get eye-catching looks
  • Will feature Vauxhall’s ‘Pure Panel’ digital dashboard
  • Electric and plug-hybrid powertrains expected alongside petrol and diesel engines

The all-new Vauxhall Astra has been previewed in a set of new teaser images ahead of its official reveal later this year.

Further details will be revealed in the coming weeks but Vauxhall has already confirmed that the eighth-generation model will get an all-new design that borrows from the new Mokka SUV. It’ll also get new technology and, for the first time ever, a range of electrified powertrains.

Vauxhall is hoping that the styling of the new Astra, which will be the first produced under the ownership of the Stellantis Group, will help it stand out against its rivals, which will include the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Honda Civic.

2021 Vauxhall Astra: design

The preview images show that the new Astra will get a new nose, which sports the ‘Vauxhall Vizor’ design. This features a smoothed-off front grille panel and upswept LED headlights that are designed to blend seamlessly together into one continuous panel spanning the width of the nose.

At the back, the new model has badging spelling out ‘Astra’ across the tailgate, along with a new angular rear bumper.

While full details are yet to be fully revealed, we’d expect the new Astra to be available with a bold palette of colours, with personalisation options including a black painted roof and a range of alloy wheel designs.

Interior and technology

The preview images confirm that the new Astra will feature the brand’s Pure Panel dual-screen infotainment setup. This is already available in the new Mokka and combines a choice of a seven or 10-inch infotainment touchscreen with a 10 or 12-inch digital dial cluster, housed in a dashboard single trim surround to make it look like one large continuous digital display.

Unlike some rivals, the new cars dashboard will retain physical controls for core functions like climate control and music volume. New online connectivity is likely to feature, while some models will also get a variety of technology upgrades, including wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.

A new steering wheel features, with a three-spoke design and a new control layout on each of the left and right spokes. Vauxhall claims the new Astra will be more upmarket inside, with a range of high-quality materials, plusher interior surfaces and more supportive front seats.

Engines, performance and platform

The new Astra will sit on the Stellantis EMP2 platform, which also underpins the latest Peugeot 308. While the engine range for the new car has yet to be revealed, Vauxhall has confirmed it will be available with an electric powertrain for the first time alongside regular petrol and diesel options. A low-emission plug-in hybrid powertrain is also likely.

Practicality

Despite the new styling, the forthcoming Vauxhall Astra will still need to be practical if it’s going to be a genuine rival to the many other competent family hatchbacks. The rear seats are likely to be mounted low to ensure there’s still plenty of headroom and the boot should improve on the 370-litre capacity offered by the current model. A larger Sport Tourer estate model will be offered alongside the regular five-door hatchback, for buyers who want more boot space.
