New Mercedes CLE Convertible to get S-Class tech
All-new model will rival BMW 4 Series and be offered in coupe and soft-top convertible form

- Replaces C-Class/E-Class Coupe/Convertible models
- Turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains expected
- Full reveal due early 2023
The Mercedes range is set to gain an all-new model to rival the likes of the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5. Dubbed the Mercedes CLE, this car will replace the coupe and convertible models of the C-Class and E-Class and will be offered in both soft and hard-top form.
As you can see from our exclusive render, the new CLE will take visual elements from both the new Mercedes C-Class as well as the upcoming sixth-generation E-Class. This new car will have the slim headlights and angular grille of the C-Class, while it will be comparable size-wise to the larger E-Class.
Stepping back, the CLE’s overall silhouette is likely to be reminiscent of Merc’s higher-end roaster, the SL; however, unlike that car, it will also offer the practicality of a coupe model. All versions of the CLE will be able to seat four people, yet we expect the coupe version to have a larger boot than the convertible.
On the inside, we anticipate the CLE will adopt the latest technology from the new Mercedes S-Class limousine. The dashboard will be dominated by a large 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster mounted behind the steering wheel. Merc’s MBUX infotainment system is among the best in the business and boasts several hi-tech features such as augmented reality navigation.
Under the CLE’s outstretched bonnet, we are likely to find the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine from the Mercedes-AMG A45 hot hatchback. In that car, this produces a muscular 415bhp; entry-level examples of the CLE could use detuned versions of this engine, leaving the maximum output for a sportier AMG CLE 43 model.

Spy photographs have already caught what we expect to be an AMG variant of the CLE patrolling the roads of Germany in heavy camouflage. The Mercedes C-Class is only offered with four-cylinder engines, even in the most high-performance models. This also could well be the case for the CLE, however it is possible that Merc could fit a larger six-cylinder unit for a range-topping AMG CLE 63 variant.
The introduction of the CLE represents Mercedes beginning to slim down their ever-expanding range; the brand’s portfolio has recently surpassed 50 individual models worldwide, so the combination of four models into two should reduce some production complexity.
We expect to see the new Mercedes CLE arrive on the scene in early 2023, with the car going on sale later that year. At this stage it is hard to pin-point what the new model may cost, however a starting price of over £60,000 seems likely, with the convertible inevitably costing more than the hard-top coupe.
