"The Vauxhall Insignia is a comfortable family hatchback that works well on the motorway and has proved popular, despite its somewhat dull image."

This is my second Vauxhall and certainly won't be my last. I had the Astra J 2.0cdti biturbo but had to part with it as wasn't practical with my new little family. If you're thinking about an insignia then buy it. It's the most comfortable, relaxing chilled drive you will ever take. When you want over take the power is there. If you're like me and fancy pushing the boundaries it has the suspension and the go.

I bought this because we thought we would make use of the space, turns out actually that its too big for us! My biggest gripe by far is the seat comfort its shocking. With the lumbar fully deflated you can still feel it digging into your back. I took the seat cover off to look if something was wrong, but no – it's designed that way with a huge piece of hard plastic digging into your back which forms part of the active head restraint system. The electrics have not been fantastic, a few times the screen has turned itself off and come back on the next day. The heating system wouldn't let me adjust the temperature at one point although this resolved itself. Sat nav is pretty poor and the whole system is incredibly laggy. On the plus side the lights are good and provide excellent visibility. Other than the issues mentioned above the car starts everyday and runs well.

Changed from previous model 2.0 diesel manual which I had no problems with but this one has been a nightmare. Since Vauxhall/Opel revised this model it seems to have gone downhill in quality. On the plus side I think it looks good; has tremendous legroom at the front (im 6ft 1 and have room); comfortable for long journeys; has a huge boot with ski flap and has been very economical. My average is 54.4MPG but most of what I do is A roads and motorways. Once up to speed the engine is very good too. The downside is something that could take a long time to talk about but I'll try to keep it brief. The good reactions at speed from the engine are not the case in town. You often have to give the gas pedal a fair bit of welly especially from stop and the racket is worth mentioning, partly from the engine (which apparently is called 'whisper'!!) and partly from the automatic gearbox. the whining and whirring this box makes is incredible. People even turn heads as I go through the village!! Worse though are the electrical problems. The car has gone back seven times due to the tyre pressure monitoring system which is constantly flashing on and off. First one wheel and now two. The car has even been left for a couple of days on two occasions and still the problem continues and adds stress to the driving experience. The sensor was changed and did nothing, now I'm waiting on a wiring part from Vauxhall because the last time it was in for two days Vauxhall had sent the wrong part. So just after one year my tyre pressure sensor light is still flashing on and off at will on each journey (often at that stressful time when I'm overtaking). The ventilation system fail due to leaf debris (surely car builders think about things like that?) and needed replacing. The touchscreen media system is a nightmare. The radio comes on at will and sometimes refuses to let me change stations, change volume or even turn it off! The exterior temperature display disappeared and also the digital clock (which is fairly important in what is essentially a car built for reps) disappeared from the screen also! This car also has bending headlights which means you can programme them for driving on the continent (when they decide to work). To start with the way of setting this up does not correspond with the handbook which says the light on the dash should flash four times. It doesn't but the headlights change to continental driving anyway so you just have to go by eyesight to know if its working. Last time I used this system the headlights would not convert back for UK use and the option in vehicle setting on the touchscreen had disappeared altogether. The car is a nightmare. It is also fitted with the much vaunted ONstar system which has special services and internet. I'd advise against the option. They say you can connect up to seven devices to the internet. You can't. Even one is difficult. its supposed to be 4G but its worse than the 3G on my phone. When I need to use it I cant get a connection and end up using my phones Internet. Save your money! The service initially sent me messages in German. When i called to ask them why they said "because you're german". I'm not! I asked them why they thought that and ONstar said the car was registered to a keeper in Germany! It took a while to sort that out. The service that monitors the cars working parts has failed to ever detect all the problems with my tyre pressure monitor . Oh and it offers a service for finding where your car is parked on your mobile device. i tried it out (luckily for fun) and the system detected that my car was parked near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin! (it was actually in Suffolk). The car is infatuated with Germany apparently. But it has proved the ONstar system is not at all reliable and not as good as your own phone and some of its services are obviously not reliable when you may well be counting on them. I have not renewed my subscription to Onstar. If I'd been asked to recommend the old original Insignia id have said "yes" but the revised model has too many imperfections and Vauxhall has nowhere near perfected the technology it is actually selling. there are far too many electrical problems. I would not get another Insignia and the whole experience, stress and time wasted has turned me against the brand as the engines and technology plus the oNstar are found in other models

Got given this as a company car and thats the only reason I have it. I have had vauxhalls in past and they were fine but they seem to have gone backwards with this car. The cabin space is poor for the length of the car and the boot space is a poor shape and has annoying metal work in the back corners meaning its difficult to get things flat in there. I came from a skoda octavia which has a bigger and better shaped boot and the car is a bit shorter as well. Also each time you open the boot after it has rained water pours into the boot from a lip in the back tailgate - really poor design. Also when reversing the rear view is awful and it makes parking hard. If you dont have sensors fitted you will struggle. Also there is no ski-hatch in the back seats and the back seats dont fold very flat when they are down. Space in the back seat is limited and headroom is very poor due to the sloping roofline. Sat nav is OK and reasonably good at picking up the postcodes but has a habit of taking you on the longest route possible. Diesel engine gives good MPG but is really sluggish until you get the turbo going and is a bit agricultural sounding. I hate the electronic handbrake and it lets go on a regular basis when you are at the lights, so you need to be ready for it failing. i always leave the car in gear when parked as I have little faith in the handbrake, its a known fault. The driving position is OK but the position of the 'A' pillar is poor and often causes issues at roundabouts blocking the view, especially of bikes etc - you need to be very careful. A\C works pretty well and 1 good feature is if you make a phone call when the fan is on full then the fan gets turned down. Phone system is OK but trying to pick phone numbers out the phone book on the move is tricky, not good in a rep mobile. Other annoying things are the cup holders are too deep for standard takeaway coffee cups meaning it is difficult to pick then up as only the lid is above the lip - I know you are not supposed to drink and drive. Also basic things like the car manual does not fit properly in the space made for it in the glove box and there is no air con in the glove box. On the posiitve side it does quite well on the motorway though its a bit noisey but gives 55 mpg if you are sensible and steady, but be aware of the poor wing mirrors not showing cars to your right as you go to overtake - massive blind spot due to shape of mirror. Overall its quite an expensive car for the level of equipment you get and I cant recommend it as something I would buy. As a final measure of the product, the company i work for have stopped using vauxhall as a car supplier due to the number of complaints from staff

I have owned my Insignia for over two years now. I brought it with 122k miles on it and now it is nudging 160k - and it still pulls like a train (160bhp). Positives: it is very comfortable to drive, love the gadgets (auto dimming rear view mirror, rain sensitive wipers, auto lights, climate control, cruise control etc.), good road holding, massive boot, good main dealer experience and reasonable servicing costs, nice cruiser, love the sat nav and being able to adjust it on the move via "the wheel" by the electronic handbrake. Negatives: can be hard to park as it is nearly 5 metres long and also is quite wide, sometimes it is hard to place yourself at junctions as the windows are quite high, sat nav update DVD is around £180 - ridiculous! Leaks through the rear wash jet on occasion, very reliable, as an Ecoflex model it is supposed to get 70+mpg - nowhere near this, 55mpg on a run and 42mpg average - my 2,0D Vectra was moe economical - but a lot slower and give me the power this car has over that any day.

I brought this car after my 53 plate volvo S60 got wrote off on holiday, I had a new Insignia as a hire car, really liked it! Never been a Vauxhall fan if I'm honest but had liked the looks of cars I'd seen in the road. when I looked into it the heavy first year depreciation meant I could buy a 1 year old elite nav with all the toys for fiesta money so I brought one, love the economy, about 50mpg so far, like the interior and satnav, that said some cheap plastics compared to the Volvo, seats aren't as good either but I believe Volvo seats are the best in the business, also engine a bit gruff at lower speeds but overall it's better in every other way, handling, ride, space, practicality, tech, cruising ability, interior ambience, the active headlights are plain awesome but it is the tech I love and the elite is loaded! It's taken 3-4 weeks to get used to things and nearly rear ended it in the first week as I was messing about with menus instead of looking at the road, I'm now finding the tech far less distracting and really convenient, electric parking break is great, heated electric seats are good and cut fatigue on a long journey, stereo pretty good quality for standard unit although I wish my one had the Bose upgrade (my Volvo has the upgraded stereo which rocked) add in that the 2.0 138 eco flex diesel is tax free I couldn't be happier, really impressed

Great comfortable motorway cruiser. Not bad on fuel but nowhere near estimated mpg. DAB radio is annoying, constantly searching for signal. Cruise control can stop working and have to turn the car off to reset it. Electric handbrake can be a pain. Three times back to the dealer for engine management light coming on. Third time this happened it went into limp mode on a motorway which was dangerous.

Very pleased so far, this car eats motorway miles with ease, 750 miles on a tank of fuel & averaging 47 mpg, impressive for 160 bhp. Very comfortable, great driving position, although door mirrors are intrusive & create blindspots. Sat Nav a bit complicated but accurate, climate control not great, find myself switching between 18 & 19 constantly, but that may change with the weather. Not as agile as a Mondeo, but much better looking & much quieter, would definitely recommend.

Plus: Fast, comfortable, fun to drive, economical for size of car, tons of space in boot. Negative: Poor SatNav, limited rear quarter visibility, parking sensors go nuts when you are still 3 feet from obstruction. Not looking forward to tyre bill but it sticks like glue so fair dos!

Good looks but poor driving on unevan roads. Gear ratios wrong for uk and noisy engine below 40mph could do with better mpg as in vw group tdi;s etc and some poor plastics in the cabin. Feels like vauxhall have swapped things around now making desirable good looking cars but build quality etc going backwards. Nice try pls try harder.

My first diesel car and i am impressed with the torque and acceleration of what is a large car. I had a astra vxr before this and although the power is less, for a diesel car is very good. Economy is also good with 35mpg urban (summer) and 60mpg+ (sensible) motorway driving. Overall a massive improvement from the vectra.

While it took a bit of getting used to, it is a big vehicle being the estate or tourer version. I really like the colour i chose, (myst green) it really compliments the shape & styling of the car. If i could go back & make my choices again, there are a few small things i would change. The 1st change i would make is that i wouldn't have the sat-nav option. It's a poor implementation of the function & i lost the dab radio in the process. I would opt for the 4wd option, especially with the current weather conditions. I would also go for the blue tooth option. I really enjoy using the car; it has a really smooth ride, i like the seats & the load space and some of the bells & whistles are really useful. The electronic hand brake is both good & bad: it's great for hill starts, but i have to watch that it doesn't release when i'm not paying attention. The car is better in the cool than in the heat of summer. Below about 16c you can drop the revs to almost zero before it stalls, but as the outside temp creeps over 20c, it will stall at the merest hint of a drop in the revs. I’ve read that there are too many small buttons on the dash, i agree, but i’m getting used to them now & don’t use many of them in normal day to day driving. The glove box is poorly implemented, it has a large door, but the space inside is small. The button behind the gear stick is too big so i constantly catch it with my arm as i change gear. So the car isn’t with out it’s niggles, but overall i really like the car, although i’d love the opportunity to change a few things to make it a really great car.

Had this car for 1 year now used as a taxi, bought it with 38k and now with 83k so its had a good bit of driving. Serviced every 10k, had a water leak at 39k from bottom of engine, put rad weld in to it sorted, the car as had 4 sets of brake pads runs a dream no dpf problems yet but ive seen a few going at 75k and 79k but I drive hard on the motorway coming and going to my place of work. No other problems - a good driving car for the money and would by another one. Only 1 thing I get is passengers hit their head coming in to the car in the rear - I get at least one hit every few days. Am waiting on some one trying to claim my insurance.

This is now my second Insignia having bought one several years previous. The car is brilliant to drive and handles well in the bends. Great on the motorway and everwhere else. Car reviews always state that the mondeo is better to drive but I don't believe that is the case(also owned mondeo) The ford is alright but there's nothing to make you feel good about the car itself as the mondeo is more like driving a transit van. This was even more true on older models from 2000 on. If you want a good reliable car which puts a smile on your face, buy one. When compared to the price of a German car I.e. BMW Audi etc you really do get alot for your money. The only negative I would state is that there can be a bit of road noise on rough stone roads but this is common in alot of cars. Oh and it's made in Germany also so now badge snobs have no excuse lol.

After reading some negative reviews I thought I'd add my experiences . I've had my Insignia for four years and apart from one sensor failing I've not had any problems whatsoever, in fact I'm just about to purchase my next Insignia, this time going for the face-lift SRI. I'm just hoping the next car is as good as the last.

Purchased for our retirement, having successfully used 2 Vectras previously as a tow car for our 1500kg Bailey Caravan. Vehicle has performed exceptionally well with towing MPG average of 34mpg. We get a similar MPG around town but get 50mpg plus on long runs and motorway journeys. We find it to be a very comfortable car, which being automatic is very easy to drive. Having been a company car user, covering 50,000 + per annum for 21 years using a number of cars from Mercs/BMWs to Ford/BMC/Peugeot models, I wish that a vehicle of this standard had been available then. We have had 1 small problem with the electric hand brake which had a wiring fault, this was quickly rectified by a Vauxhall Independent dealer.
