Toyota Verso owner reviews

"The Toyota Verso MPV is spacious and should provide trustworthy and affordable motoring over the years. It might not be hugely desirable, but it’s very well thought-out"

This is our 4th Toyota, so we know the brand well now. I can sum this car up by saying that if you want a car that will last for years and not let you down, this is the brand for you. We bought the Verso new after trading in our 8 year old/85,000 mile Picnic which was super reliable too. In the 10 years we have owned the Verso we have used the car for commuting, supermarket run, running the kids to school, then running them back and forth to University, loaded to roof with stuff from flats. We take it for longer motorway runs periodically too with six on board or more often now just two. The Verso just takes everything we throw at at in its stride. The engine is strong enough to keep up with motorway traffic, even with a load on, and the gear shift is smooth and quick . It is not the most refined car, and can be a bit noisy on rough road surfaces. There is also an annoying buzz sometimes from the dash. But I am 6'2" / 188cm and find it comfortable on long runs whilst me wife is considerably shorter and finds it comfortable to drive as well. The 3rd row of seats are OK for smaller people/children as is often the case. In terms of reliability it has only had one issue in 10 years, and that was a sticking engine gas recirculation valve. This was looked at twice by Toyota. The second time they took the car for a week and replaced the engine top end. Now you must be thinking "sounds bad, not buying one of those" but check this out. The car was two years outside the warranty period and it didn't cost us a penny! Toyota footed the entire bill. Since then the car has performed flawlessly, only needing a new battery after 7 years. Other than that nothing has broken, and everything still works. The paintwork still looks fresh and so does the interior (if a bit dusty). If it died tomorrow, for the service we had had from it and considering what we paid for it, it has been great value. The dealers too look after you and running costs are reasonable.

Bought new. Centre mirror was loose when I picked up the car, creaky interior and still not fixed to date, developed a fuel sensor problem on its first service and still trying to resolve the problem. Fuel gauge was showing fuel tank but the miles range was showing 245 miles!? The BMW 1.6 engine is a bit rough around the edges and you need to rev it hard to achieve some speed. 6th Gear just doesn't have any guts at all on the motorway. Good points are fuel economy, getting around 48mpg which is a mix of town and motorway driving. Managed to achieve 57mpg whilst dropping people off to Heathrow, but have to drive painfully slow at 56-60 mph. Boot is a decent size, clever pull up and push down flat seats, but the two rear seats are for children only. First service bill came up to £169 on 10/8/2015.

I bought this car as my wife always has Toyotas and has had no problems - but they have been new cars. I bought this Verso as a used car with 36K miles on the clock. It has been back to the garage to have new pistons and rings due to engine noise. They told me it was a fault with the engine and was fixed under warranty. 3,000 miles later, car back in garage with same issues and even more noises. I am not a happy bunny at moment, although I will say it is a nice car to drive. I suggest if you get any noises from the engine to take it back as it it a known fault. Tyre wear is also very excessive and the brake disc seems to need to be renewed after 30K, which seems a bit odd to me. Also watch out for oil as I am putting in a litre every thousand miles and have no leaks. Top end of engine very noisy.

A brilliant versatile, reliable, economic, powerful, family vehicle, while being less than 1800mm wide, fits into the standard home garage. It also has the essential spare wheel and instruments in front of the driver. The only aspect that lets the car down, is its firm ride, which no normal family man wants for his passengers. The 2010 verso has no spare wheel or instruments in front of the driver, so i will not be buying the new model and will have to look elsewhere.

Mine has been OK until now. I bought it because it is one of the few cars to have a very flexible loading area with a completely flat floor when all the seats are down, I carry 5-inch gauge miniature railway locomotives. Mine has just been diagnosed with a leaking water pump (after 98K miles). The quote from the main dealer was £1,196!. I'll go to an Independent workshop, because Toyota says the engine has to come out. Others say that access is tight, but it can be done with the engine in place.

A very good car being small, smart, spacious, and economical. It has Toyota's enviable reputation of high standards of reliability and great build quality. It looks great and is very easy to drive and park with lots of high tech gadgets and gizmos as standard on TR spec. I would recommend this to all my family and friends.

Before in my other review I mention that the problems were with gearbox and clutch. However since that review I have had the problems fixed by my local Toyota dealership. If your car has 5 year Toyota warranty/100,000 mile warranty it's covered only if your car is 5 yrs or younger. However the Verso is reliable and practical and I look forward to a few more years of motoring before I change it. I'm not keen on the new small engines though 1.6 & 1.8 I would have loved Toyota to have kept the 2.0l. I will keep editing my reviews. P.S Hope this helps. The gearbox and clutch are now working fine.

The car broke down inexplicably 10 days after its 3yr service: manufacturing fault - rectified (but with great pain and delay it must be said) in the end at no cost (apart from towing costs and RAC premium increases) to us but fear for its overall reliability consistently as a result. Car was recalled previously for a fault and plastic clips consistently fall off the internal decoration of the car etc. We have a 12 year old rover too that has never broken down and cost less as a result.

I purchased this based on Toyotas famed reliability. At its first service the T main dealer said the engine management system would have to be replaced. This was done under warranty. I have had the car serviced by the T main dealer under a 4 year service contract renewed on expiry for another 4 years. At year 7 started having problems engaging 1st and 2nd gear, 1st occasionally and 2nd all the time until the engine gearbox warmed up (approx. 5-10mins) then gearbox is fine. Went to my main T main dealer and explained the problem. They changed the gearbox oil FOC. It made no difference. I then left it with them so they could see for themselves the problem is there when starting from cold. They tested it and said whilst it was a little bit difficult they could engage the gear. They said it could be a clutch problem or something wrong wrong with the synchromesh. I said surely this should not happen on a car that had done only 45000 miles. I got the shrugging of shouilders from the service manager. So I asked him what would be the cost to rectify. I was given a figure of about £1200. I asked him if he would guarantee that this would cure the problem. He said No! I then went on the Toyota Forum site. It appears to be a known problem. What happened is the Toyota used there 5 gear box casing and squeezed another gear in it so they could use it for the 6 gear of that the D4D diesel required. I them spoke to Toyota Customers relations who were no help at all. In this forum it was stated that using a different oil could resolve the problem. The recommended oil being Fuchs Titan RACE SRG75 @ £16 per litre. Whilst this has improved it somewhat, i.e. better than before, the problem is still there. I am on the opinion that to save tooling cost Toyota used a casing that is not fit for its purpose. The one bright spot is that I obtained 40000 miles on my first set of tyres. Would I purchase another Toyota? No way!

No problems in five years, perfectly reliable, dependable car. Let down a little by cheap interior trim. Suspension a bit on the hard side. Plan to buy a Trend next March.

Owned for two years, has not been as reliable as a previous Corolla. Has had new front shock absorber and new wiper motor. Interior plastics are a bit low rent and scratch easy.
