Peugeot 508 saloon (2011-2018): owner reviews

“The Peugeot 508 is a handsome saloon car that’s relaxing to drive, but it’s showing its age against more rounded rivals and looks pricey”

I've ad nothing but problems since purchasing this car, seldom a month goes by without having to make a garage visit. The problems often seem to be ignored by the dealership, a list too long to go through here. Currently there's a loud noise from the rear electric motor, the gearbox is too noisy noisy, and it jumps in gear, and we don't know whether it's caused by the clutch or flywheel?

Very good and reliable car, never let me down on the road. Quiet and comfortible on motorways. Super interior quality, bmw or MB like. Ergonomics - better than rivals. Not so good on roads with holes in it. The engine is powerfull at all speeds. really recommend this car, super long way cruiser!

My first ever Peugeot. No issues - not even a light bulb! I love the car, but hate the semi-automatic gearbox. Solid and comfortable and a very under-rated car! The 1.6 diesel is outstanding - quiet and smooth and economical! Handling is okay - ride could be better.

I have been using this wonderful car in Saudi Arabia for almost three years. The car covered around 64,000km since new and I am the first owner. I did not complain about anything at all for the first 55,000km. All of a sudden, I saw engine warning light come on. The Peugeot dealer changed the turbo when the car had 60,000 km. Thankfully, Peugeot in Saudi Arabia come with an extended warranty of five years or 1,000,000km and I paid for oil change some consumable parts only; a new part would cost up to $3,000. After less than 2,000 km the car suffered from engine noise and the dealer again changed fuel pump, head gaskets. Apart form that, the car is still in mint condition and drives like new.

Okay, I am an established Peugeot owner, this being my fifth one. My typical mpg is based on my personal driving style of 80 km h/53 mph "light on the right - reduces fuel costs and maintenance bills. The best I have managed is a staggering 104 mpg on a round trip of 90 miles. I am genuine in these statistics. Comfort and space in the interior and luggage compartments are first class, style - well Peugeot have hit the nail on the head with this model. Only downside for me is the absurd awkwardness of the bulb changing process.

I have owned the vehicle for 18 months now, bought with 16,000 on the clock, and it now has 25,000. In terms of good points, there aren't as many as the bad points that overrides them. It's nice to have auto wipers, but the driver's side hits the A-pillar. The lights are nice with smart-beam assistance but when they go wrong they go wrong as the driver's side stayed in the up position for 3 weeks whilst waiting for the part. The sat-nav works when it wants and has been back to the dealer four times now, the last time was 8 weeks ago, only to be told I'll have to wait now as new sat-nav is on order. I'm still waiting and phoning. The onboard computer does not kick in until 15 MPH so a true reading of MPH or average speed cannot be guaranteed. I don't think I'll buy Peugeot again, my last car was better and that had done 150,000 and was 12 years old at the time.

I love this car. The first thing that struck me was how comfortable the seats are, which my wife has also commented upon. The cabin is quiet and calming, especially when driving at night with the overhead ambient lighting. The ride is pretty smooth and the (163bhp) engine has very hearty acceleration for safe overtaking. It also represents excellent value: when looking for a used car, I found that 508's were typically cheaper than Mondeos, Insignias, Passats etc, while having a much higher spec. For £10k I got a big diesel saloon with low mileage, sat nav, cruise control and dual climate control - much better than the competition (though not so good news for buyers of brand new 508s). My kids love the "secret" button for opening the boot too. I bought the car with 15k on the clock and have only had it for five months but I've found it to be totally reliable, with no issues to report. My MPG of 52 represents a daily journey of half motorway/half town driving. This is very satisfying given that my previous car - a 1.2 petrol Clio - only managed 43mpg for the same route. Slight niggles are: the drips when opening the boot lid; the "booby trap" glove box, where items roll onto the open lid and prevent it from closing again; the unintuitive radio and info display controls - not helped by the abundance of buttons and wheels that perform the same functions - and the door pockets where objects become unreachable while driving if they slide deeper into the pocket. Apart from that, the 508 is a lovely place to be and I actually look forward to my Monday morning commute. I really can't understand why these handsome, Jaguar-esque cars are so rarely seen on UK roads.

This is best car I have had. Not even a lightbulb replaced over 100,000kms, very comfortable, good handling, superb build quality, I will definetely buy another one. Brake pads needed to be replaced at 35,000 miles. Servicing costs are very reasonable too.

My vehicle was bought as an "ex-management" car from a Peugeot main dealer at around 6,000 miles and has now covered around 25,000. The quality and comfort of the interior for both driver and passengers is good, as widely acknowledged in expert reviews, but is compromised by excessive wind noise at speeds above 60 MPH, an irritating vibration from the dashboard at certain speeds, and banging arising from the offside windscreen wiper hitting the 'A' post at the end of its travel. Whilst these niggles can perhaps be tolerated - after all, the car is a lot, lot, cheaper that the equivalent german models with the same features - the unreliability of the electrical systems can't. Over the 19,000 miles of my ownership the car has suffered failure of the headlights, failure of the battery circuit relay, and most recently the failure of the navigation system. There was some difficulty in getting repairs under warranty approved in relation to the battery circuit relay. After getting into correspondence with Peugeot UK there was an acknowledgement that there were some process issues that needed to be resolved, hopefully others will not experience the same problem in future. The failure of the headlights was not picked-up in pre-delivery checks and immediately became evident on the first journey after dark. Neither had the main dealer noticed that the steering was pulling to the left. Several return visits to the dealer were needed in order to diagnose and resolve the headlights problem. Two trips to the four-wheel alignment jig at my trusted tyre dealer eventually solved the steering problem, and the handling of the car is now pretty good. There has been one safety recall to check that fuel pipes in the engine compartment had not been damaged during production. More generally, the car has performed well and is popular with passengers. The specification of the HDi 200 model represents good value for money. Being equipped with a conventional auto gearbox rather than the one fitted on other models in the range, the car makes smooth progress through the gears and is a pleasure to drive over longer distances. If only Peugeot could improve their build quality!

This car has been exceptional over the 4 years I have driven it. It was incredibly cheap when I bought it only 16 months old and with 15K on the clock. The comfort and smoothness is first class. The engine doesn't miss a beat. And it is really quiet. To be honest, I didn't want to sell it, but was forced to do so by an ageist company policy. Shame, but it gave me a chance to look at other rivals, who didn't compare, so I've just bought another! Yes, the boot is a dull shape and lets in water, and it won't open without the key now, but that's it over 30 months and 65K miles. Forget all that, I just love the effortless way it gets you around, and the 163 BHP version lets you slip past others quietly and with ease. Passengers have also liked the classy interior and ride. It has lugged some stuff around too, and I mean a lot! Not a creak. Sooo glad I've got another!

I bought this car used at 60.000 miles after a mechanical check by experienced mechanic. the car had its automatic gearbox recently repaired but that was all. Check was fine and no mechanical problems found. The engine runs smoothly and is very very economical (less than 6 lt/100 km at urban usage). The engine is not powerful but does the job. the gearbox is a little peculiar but it you understand its habits it is not a problem. Unfortunately the navigation/rado unit proved problematic and I have to replace it. i agree with other comments that this is a shame but not because it is a major cost as such but because I strongly believe it is a design failure and not a unit malfunction. Electronics do not break down that often without a reason. My opinion is that the cause of the problem lies in the electrical power management and not in the unit itself. I say this not from 'intuition' but because the behaviour seems aligned with the electrical requirements - for example the start-stop behaviour was influenced and I can not see a relationship between the navigation unit and the start-stop function - but there is! In any case apart from that, the car runs smoothly, interior quality is good, the knobs and switches of the infotainment system could be more 'rational' (for example although there are a lot of knobs but still you can not switch from radio to usb from the steering wheel, it is just stupid design!). Build quality, noises etc are not up to german standards but in order to get same specs you have to pay at least 20% more for a german rival , this is significant. Overall the 'package' is not bad, I have no regrets for my choice, but if someone can spend more money it is advisable to go german - sorry my friends in France but you could have avoided some errors...

I use this car for a daily 76 mile commute and recently done a 1850 mile round trip from Scotland to France with my family, average mpg for the trip was 41mpg crusing at a good pace and using aircon. The engine is very quiet when crusing and at idle. Some reviews seem to suggest excessive wind noise at speed but I have not recognised this and I'm quite pernickety when it comes to noises/sounds in the car. Car has lots of technology for the price. The built in large screen sat nav with traffic and speed camera warnings is good. The car feels just as good in terms of quality as the the German saloon I had before it. It is very spacious and comfortable compared with the 3 series & passat. Only a few small things that I do not like are: oil consumption (1lt every 2k), engine sometimes hesitates at around 1800 rpm unless premium fuel is used, SR model only has one 12v socket! Overall I'm very pleased with the car and think I'll have it for a while.

This hasn't been a good buy. I love the way it looks and it has a high specification and is very comfy, but its performance is so-so and it keeps breaking down. It cuts out when the weather gets cold. The main dealer seems clueless on how to fix it. When it is eventually fixed i'm going to sell it.

Avoid, avoid, avoid! The build quality on this car is awful. For a while it was averaging 1 trip to the garage each month. Bearing in mind it was new when I bought it, I had problems with air con (3 times), wipers (twice), stereo, electrics, rattles (lots!) etc. The stated mpg of 78 was actually more like 48. On the good side, it was very well specced and was quick when in sport mode (although I didn't use that much because of the hit on mpgs) and is low on car tax. All in all, one of the worst cars I've ever had.

I bought my 10,800 mile Pearl White 508 from a dealer. It was an eight-month-old December 2013 registered ex-Peugeot car and was perfect apart from two small touch-in stone chips, a slightly ring-marked steering wheel and surface rust on the hubs that I anti-rust painted myself. The alloys were unmarked and seem new rather than refurbished...removable tow bar too. The car drives excellently and has the usual cabin issues eg tiny glove box and centre arm rest cupboard, badly designed door pockets and no centre console storage as the company bosses thought that adding heated seat switches where the storage is on lesser models was a good idea! Some other "issues": the half leather seats crease far too easily, the B pillars are too thick and difficult to see around, the rear bumper on the driver's side is slightly out of line with the bodywork (something I seen on other 508s), dash buttons hard to remember, daft heater system, boot design when opened allows rain to drip into the boot too easily, plastics could be better and less "scratchy". Good points include: it's quite easy to drive, Gallic charm, great dashboard quality, design, comfortable cruiser, smoothe cruise control and heated seats these mornings. Happy so far and don't agree with the 2.5/5 rating....anti-French/EU bias I fear.

Excellent car with a few niggles that I knew about before buying it. The glovebox is a joke and water drips in the boot when you open it in the rain. However, the car is very well built, very economical and great to drive, being both smooth and quiet and comfortable. I brought the car with 17,000 miles on the clock and 18 months later now has almost 49,000 on it. Apart from servicing and tyres it has cost me nothing apart from fuel and road tax. My brother has a friend who had an Audi A6 and he compares the 508 with it in a favourable way. It is my first Peugeot and I must admit I was sceptical at first until I read lots of reviews. I'm over the moon with it to say the least, and friends and family also love it.
