My Avensis is now 2 years / 24,000 miles old. My average has been 47 mpg, my best 58.5 mpg achieved over a 2,000 mile journey on French roads. A conservative engineering philosophy, mature technologies and good build quality mean excellent reliability and I've had no problems whatsoever to date. The heater warms up quickly, the driver's seat is comfortable but adjustment is limited, the passenger seat has no height adjustment. Centre and door arm rests aid long distance driving comfort, as does good steering feel and a left foot rest. The 8" Sat Nav screen is easy to read except when in direct sunlight when it's invisible, however the verbal instruction are clear. The TFT screen between speedo and rev counter provides useful information, unfortunately the text chosen for time and temperature readout is much too small to be easily read. The diesel engine was somewhat unrefined till 20,000 miles, then quietened noticeably. The back seat is roomy for two adults, the boot is 500 litres or thereabouts, and you get a space saver spare wheel rather than the dreaded puncture repair arrangement. The brakes are good, the gearbox is positive if not the slickest, visibility is good but headlight main beam and dipped are both very dim. In fact the lights are so poor a night time drive on an unlit winding country road is not a pleasant experience. Apart from the 3rd rate headlights and a jiggly ride on broken city streets the Avensis has a lot to recommend it to sensible owners who want honest dependable transport.

I can not understand the poor ratings this car gets for looking bland and being no fun to drive. I think it looks great, a vast improvement on that German giant jelly mould look. It never gets any real mention of it value for money, its outstanding reliability, not to mention the highest safety rating you can get. it really is easy to operate (it has all the toys and whats more they actually work) and drive, making it superb for family use which is what most of us normal drivers require. This is my forth Toyota (some of which have done upwards of 100,000 miles) and I have never ever had a problem with any of them. If you want to take hairpin bends at 70 mph buy a bus pass and hire a Ferrari for weekends. My Avensis has so far been outstanding and I would thoroughly recommend it over any overpriced German tractor with a designer label anyday .

I had one as a company car for around a year. I honestly think it's the worst car I have ever driven, period! The steering is all over the shop and has no consistency whatsoever in the weighting of the wheel. Why the electronics reset themselves after about two hours of driving I do not know, it leaves you to have to pull over to turn the engine on and off to reset the whole car. How they've developed a 1.6 diesel thats so bad on power, torque, MPG and it sounds like its always struggling is amazing. Its too loud on all roads engine noise is too intrusive. All in all its a bag of nails that should belong in the scrapheap

Ex demo (rental) car bought with 11000 miles on the clock. 4 years warranty and Toyota experience, plus size (I am 6'5") made it a simple choice. Good points: It's been 100% reliable up to 75,000 miles i.e. present, low tyre usage, 55mpg on long hauls. It has an absolutely adequate spec, satnav, cruise, climate and rear camera. The engine is engine excellent once past 20k miles. Great seating for myself and passengers. I suspect the car will carry on happily to 200k miles looking at our local taxi fleet. If you want a bulletproof trouble free and well equipped plodder, then this is perfect. Bad points: Rattles and squeaks which have multiplied. Paintwork defect on roof and our dealer wasn't interested in either of these issues. I experienced a big drop to 44mpg in mixed driving, and have no idea if that's bad or not.

Have the car a week and a fault with the front sensor located behind the rear view mirror on the windscreen has cropped up. Am waiting on dealers to take it back to replace same. Apparently it is a common fault with the new Toyota as dampness from the windscreen causes the sensor to malfunction. Was not told this when I bought it but when I called after sales service they immediately knew of the problem and are currently replacing the sensor on a significant number of 2016's.

Very disappointed have had several Toyotas all new but this new model is not great as the new safety system has several problems and constantly stops working when weather conditions are wet. This is actually very dangerous as I have had my auto lights fail and all auto systems stop. Toyota said this is a software issue which will be corrected in May sometime. Mechanically the car is perfect but this so called safety system should not be allowed on the road as it's not working.

This car was mistakenly bought to replace a 2013 Skoda Superb. It is absolutely hopeless in comparison. Slow, badly equipped, and gutless. The ride quality is fidgety, the steering feel is inconsistent at best, the seats are not comfortable, there's not much rear legroom and on a 50mph A-road the Toyota requires 4th gear to get up a hill where the Skoda (or indeed most rivals) will happily pull 6th. The engine sounds gruff and there is quite a bit of road noise even on the original fitment Michelin tyres - when it's 3 years old and running on Wanli or Linglong tyres it'll be a lot louder. Wind up rear windows and manual air-con in a £20k car? In 2015? Really? The electric handbrake is irritating, and the stop start system starts the engine for no reason after 30-40 seconds of sitting at traffic lights. It also takes two or three goes before it'll start after being parked, normal procedure is to depress clutch and brake pedals, turn key, swear, turn the key back to off, and try again until the thing starts. I've been driving cars professionally for 25 years, driving up to 70,000 miles a year and the 2015 Avensis is one of the least enjoyable modern cars I've ever driven. It's almost as bad as the Vauxhall Insignia {which has a better engine} and barely an improvement on the Hyundai i40 (which has a less miserable interior). If you enjoy driving, you won't enjoy the Avensis. Avoid this car with extreme prejudice. It is hopeless, although the radio isn't bad.

This is my first Toyota car and the worst car I bought in my life. After 6 months here are the issues: 1. Plastic front spoiler received week after car delivery 2. Noises from the boot area when 3/4 and full of gasoline 3. Shocks by flywheel and clutch burning on reverse drive 4. In drive, steering wheel detached from chassis and fell on my knees. Fatal error could cause death! 5. Occasional "knock" in steering while turning left or right 6. Loose brake pedal 7. Noisy clutch pedal 8. Drivers left air ventilation loose 9. Drivers seat belt rattles 10. Drivers window creaks when opens on rain 11. Found 2 inch bolt in motor area I am questioning myself did I bought a second hand car or a brand new one. The steering wheel situation had a clear basis for lawsuit but I did not start any. At this point I am no more interested in 5 year warranty since I cannot lose my time any more with repair center. As for all mentioned above, I requested local Sales Company for car replacement or full money back.

MY THIRD AVENSIS SINCE 1995, FIRST ONE WAS A COMPANY CAR WHICH AT 1997 I RETIRED WITH AT 20,000MILE, THE OTHER TWO WERE PURCHASED USED WITH ABOUT 4,000 miles FROM NEW ONLY, NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THEM.

Car is reliable, parts aren't. Have had 3 recalls, and now been told front and back discs are corroded and pitted. This from a car that has done ONLY 19,275 miles from NEW. These discs are costing me Ł460 to renew. This is a rip-off and a scandal
