Small SUVs coming in 2021

BMW X2 facelift

On sale: Autumn

The BMW X2 is set to get an array of updates later this year. Bigger grilles will feature, alongside a number of other styling tweaks that mirror the facelifted BMW X1 and X3 models. You’ll be able to use the iDrive system as a touchscreen for the first time, while a plug-in hybrid that debuted this year will continue in the facelifted car.

Citroen C3 Aircross facelift

The Citroen C3 Aircross is no longer the cute small SUV, as the facelifted model looks a lot more aggressive than before. There’s a new touchscreen, too, but it’s frustrating that you’ll still have to use it to access the climate control.

Honda HR-V

2021 Honda HR-V

On sale: Now

The third-generation Honda HR-V has been revealed. This time around, the brand’s small SUV will get sleeker styling, improved interior space and an array of new technology, including an updated infotainment system. It’ll only be available with a new 129bhp dual-motor e-HEV hybrid powertrain, which Honda claims is capable of returning around 52mpg.

Hyundai Bayon

Hyundai Bayon SUV

On sale: Now

The new Hyundai Bayon SUV has been revealed and will sit below the Kona in the brand’s lineup. It’s heavily based on the Hyundai i20 hatchback and comes with a mild-hybrid 1.0-litre petrol engine in two power guises, making it cheap to run. It also gets all of Hyundai’s latest tech inside, along with a decent sized boot. As a result of the Bayon’s arrival, we expect the next-generation Kona to be offered with electric power only.

Hyundai Kona facelift

On sale: Now

Hyundai’s current smallest SUV has been refreshed for 2021, with a new face that streamlines the car’s styling. It’s on sale now, and comes in a new set of trim levels including a sporty N Line model.

Lexus UX 300e

Lexus UX 300e

On sale: Now

Lexus has had hybrid models in its range for over a decade, and now every one of its cars is available as a hybrid. The brand’s first electric car is a version of the UX, its small SUV, which will return 196 miles of range and have 50kW fast-charging capability. It also boasts a decent sized boot that’s bigger than the UX Hybrid and a plush interior.

Mercedes EQA

Mercedes EQA front

On sale: Now

While electric small SUVs from Audi and BMW are still some way off, Mercedes has introduced the EQA, which is clearly based on the Mercedes GLA. One powertrain is available from launch, offering around 260 miles of range and a reasonable nine-second 0-62mph time.

Renault Arkana

Renault Arkana

On sale: Now

Renault has bolstered its SUV lineup with the new Arkana coupe-SUV. It’s based on the Renault Captur and gets swooping fastback styling but still has a large boot. An E-Tech hybrid engine is offered alongside a petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance, and Renault claims that around 80% of journeys around town can be done on pure-electric power.

Subaru XV facelift

2021 Subaru XV

On sale: Now

The Subaru XV is rare in this class for offering actual off-road ability - so it could be worth a look if you regularly have to cross tricky terrain. Only very minor styling tweaks have been applied but there’s extra safety technology.

Vauxhall Crossland facelift

The Vauxhall Crossland SUV has been refreshed, with Vauxhall’s new ‘Vizor’ face giving its smallest crossover a welcome shot of smartness. Prices start from just over £19,000, and rise to over £25,500.

Vauxhall Mokka

The new Vauxhall Mokka is offered with petrol and diesel engines but the main focus is on a new pure electric model. Sitting on the same platform as the Peugeot e-2008, the electric Mokka-e offers 201 miles of range and fast-charging. The interior is dominated by screens; there are few physical buttons.

Family SUVs coming in 2021

Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron

Audi Q4 e-tron

On sale: Now

The latest addition to Audi’s electrified line-up is the Q4 e-tron, which shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq iV. Buyers can pick from a regular SUV bodystyle or a swooping Sportback version, and you can expect a range of over 300 miles in the range-topping models. Fast-charging will give 80% battery charge in half an hour.

Audi Q5 Sportback

Coupe SUVs are very popular right now and the German brands have released quite a few in the last few years. The latest is the Audi Q5 Sportback, which rivals the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe. Besides the rakish coupe look, the interior and powertrains will be shared with the regular Audi Q5 SUV, but the Sportback will have a more athletic focus with sports suspension fitted as standard.

Citroen C5 X Crossover

Citroen C5 X

On sale: Late 2021/early 2022

The Citroen C5 X is the brand’s new flagship model that attempts to fuse a large hatchback with SUV-style bodywork and a raised ride-height. The new car is said to offer “ultimate comfort” and a vast boot, along with a luxury interior and a 21-inch infotainment display. The C5 X won’t be offered with a diesel engine, instead getting a range of conventional petrol engines and a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Hyundai Tucson

New Hyundai Tucson

On sale: Now

At the LA Motor Show in November 2019, Hyundai revealed a boldly styled family-size SUV called the Vision T. The concept morphed into the latest generation of the Tucson SUV, which is the most striking version yet. It has a redesigned interior, all-new technology and safety features, and comes with a range of hybrid powertrains.

Jaguar E-Pace plug-in hybrid

The Jaguar E-Pace is now available as a plug-in hybrid and shares the same platform as the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque. Alongside the new PHEV powertrain, the latest E-Pace receives all of the brand’s latest technology, including the new Pivi Pro infotainment system and mild-hybrid electrical assistance for a majority of its regular petrol and diesel engines.

Maserati Grecale

On sale: Late 2021

Maserati’s second SUV is in the pipeline. It’ll be called the Grecale and will rival the Jaguar F-Pace, Mercedes GLC and Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Parts will be shared with the Alfa Romeo, and Maserati has confirmed an electric version wearing a ‘Folgore’ badge.

Nissan Ariya

On sale: Autumn

Nissan has launched an electric SUV called the Ariya. It’ll be a similar size to the Nissan X-Trail SUV but more of a swooping roofline will mean it’s a spacious five-seater instead of a seven-seater. We expect Nissan’s next-generation ProPilot driver assistance to be fitted, perhaps giving the car self-driving capability.

Nissan Qashqai

A new generation of Nissan’s family SUV has arrived. To attempt to steal buyers away from its long list of rivals, Nissan has given the new car a bold styling makeover along with a new petrol engine with mild-hybrid assistance, plus a premium hi-tech interior. A new e-Power plug-in is also on the way, which should help widen the Qashqai’s appeal to buyers even further.

Porsche Macan EV

On sale: Late 2021

Now that the Porsche Taycan is in showrooms, the company is turning its attention to an all-electric Macan SUV to replace the current generation. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know that it’ll feature ultra-rapid charging capability to reduce the time needed to refill the batteries. The Macan EV will open the floodgates for a range of electrified Porsche models - the company says half its sales will be hybrid or electric by 2022.

Range Rover Crossover

On sale: Unknown

A new Range Rover model called the Crossover will become part of the line-up in 2021. It’ll be as opulent as the full-size model but with a lower, sleeker shape. Just like the Range Rover, it’ll come with a range of mainly electrified powertrains.

Renault Megane E-TECH Electric 

2022 Renault Megane E-TECH Electric

On sale: Late 2021

The new Renault Megane E-TECH Electric is an evolution of the brand’s family hatchback, with a new crossover design and a pure-electric powertrain. It sits on the same platform as the forthcoming Nissan Ariya and wears the E-TECH badge seen on the brand’s other electrified models. Renault claims the new car will be capable of up to 292 miles of range between charges, a figure that puts it in direct competition with the Kia EV6, Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Skoda Enyaq iV

Skoda has launched its first electric SUV, called the Enyaq iV. A range of over 330 miles is confirmed for the range-topping version, and it has a spacious interior with plenty of technology. It undercuts the equivalent Volkswagen ID.4 on price, with prices for the base-model starting from around £32,000 after the plug-in car grant. There’ll be a vRS performance version, and an Enyaq Coupe with more rakish styling.

Skoda Karoq facelift

On sale: Winter

The midsize Skoda Karoq SUV is set to be updated next year with a series of styling tweaks, updated technology and an engine with mild-hybrid assistance similar to those seen in the new Volkswagen Golf. A prototype has already been spotted testing, and while it gives little away, we’d expect the new Karoq to get an updated interior, along with the latest technology and safety features from the new Skoda Octavia.

SsangYong Korando E100 electric model

On sale: Late 2021

SsangYong’s answer to the Nissan Qashqai will be available as an electric model soon. A 61.5kWh battery will power the car (possibly called the Korando E100), and 200 miles on a full charge is the target. A price tag in the region of £30-£35,000 is expected.

Tesla Model Y

On sale: Late 2021

While the Tesla Model Y has been available in North America for several months, it’s slated to arrive in the UK towards the end of this year. It shares most of its parts with the Tesla Model 3 and is offered in ‘Long Range’ and ‘Performance’ guises with a range of between 298 and 313 miles.

Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid

Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

On sale: Now

A new plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota RAV4 has gone on sale, promising an impressive electric range of over 40 miles and the same power output as a Cupra Ateca or Mercedes-AMG GLA 35. The RAV4 PHEV should be a hit with business and private buyers, although it is quite a bit more expensive than the hybrid version.

Volkswagen ID.4

VW ID.4

On sale: Now

The electric Volkswagen ID.4 SUV has followed the ID.3 hatchback into showrooms. It’s capable of between 200-300 miles of range, depending on the size of the battery, and is similar in size to a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV. Fast-charging capability is standard, meaning topping the battery up to 80% capacity will take around half an hour. VW has also added a GTX performance model to the lineup that offers improved performance.

Volkswagen ID.6

On sale: Winter

The ID.4 will be joined by a bigger ID.6 electric SUV towards the end of next year, which will have the option of seven seats. It’ll have few direct rivals at the time of launch, and will offer bigger motors and batteries than the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback. Nearly all models are expected to have a motor on each axle, giving four-wheel drive.

Volvo C40

Volvo C40

On sale: Spring

The Volvo C40 is the brand’s first fully electric model, and it’s essentially a coupe version of the XC40 P8 Recharge EV. Zero-to-62mph takes under five seconds, and a 261-mile range is promised. Volvo is planning to sell most C40s online.
