Fast SUVs coming in 2022
Aston Martin DBX Coupe

On sale: 2022
Aston Martin is planning to expand its DBX range with a svelte new coupe model. The new car will become the flagship of the range when it arrives and will give the brand a more direct rival to the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Lamborghini Urus. While powertrains are yet to be confirmed, it's likely a petrol V8 will arrive alongside a plug-in hybrid.

BMW Concept XM

On sale: 2022
The forthcoming BMW XM will be the brand’s first M model with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain when it arrives in 2022. The new car has been previewed with the reveal of the XM Concept and it's been confirmed that it will be the first standalone ‘M’ model, with no regular versions. While BMW has yet to reveal full details about its performance, the model is likely to get a power figure of over 700bhp, making it the most powerful production car ever built by the brand.

Range Rover Sport

On sale: 2022
A brand-new Range Rover Sport is on the way and will follow the latest Range Rover into showrooms. The new Sport model will receive a svelte redesign similar to the Velar, along with improved practicality. It’s likely to adopt all of the technology seen across the JLR lineup, including a larger infotainment touchscreen along with a redesigned luxury interior. The model will sit on the brand’s new MLA platform, which is suitable for mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure-electric powertrains.

Large SUVs and pickups coming in 2022
BMW iX5 hydrogen

On sale: 2022
BMW will be releasing plenty of electric models in the coming years but it’s also working on hydrogen power. It plans to release a small number of hydrogen-powered BMW iX5s in 2022 but says that a large-scale adoption of hydrogen power is still some way off because of the lack of infrastructure. When it arrives, the iX5 hydrogen will get a 369bhp powertrain and can be refilled in “three to four minutes,” giving it a respectable usable range.

Dacia Bigster

On sale: 2022
Dacia has laid out its five-year plan, promising three new models including the new Bigster SUV, which will be the first to arrive in 2022. It’ll be the brand’s first large SUV but a relatively affordable one, as you’d expect. This is thanks to a new platform co-developed with Renault and Nissan, meaning it will share several parts with other models. The Bigster will be the largest model ever offered by Dacia in the UK when it arrives, and is likely to get a choice of five or seven-seat layouts.

Ford Ranger

On sale: 2022
For the latest Ranger, Ford has ushered in a tough new look, upgraded technology and improved practicality. It sits on the same platform as the next Volkswagen Amarok and has a range of new engines, including a four-cylinder petrol and a pair of diesels. The brand has also promised a fully electric model too, which is slated to arrive after launch. Meanwhile, the new Ranger Raptor gets a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine that produces 284bhp.

Lagonda SUV

On sale: 2022
Now that the Aston Martin DBX has launched, the British company will turn its focus to launching a luxury SUV under its Lagonda brand. Unlike the current crop of mega SUVs, however, the Lagonda will stand out with a purely electric powertrain. Few things are known about the ‘All-Terrain concept’ yet, but we’re told the production version will retain the boldness of the concept - if it makes production at all.

Nissan X-Trail

On sale: 2022
Having undergone a series of minor updates since it was introduced six years ago, the fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail will introduce an array of updated technology, a new design and a hybrid powertrain. The new car has already been revealed in North America, where it’s known as the Rogue, with tech such as LED headlights and a digital instrument cluster fit as standard. It also gets a redesigned interior with plenty of soft-touch materials.

Range Rover

On sale: now
The new Range Rover boasts even more luxury features and an expanded engine range in an attempt to take it even further upmarket to rival ultra-luxurious SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga and Aston Martin DBX. It sits on a new platform that can accommodate petrol-electric hybrid, diesel and electric motors. Only regular models will be available at launch but JLR has already confirmed the electric Range Rover will arrive in a couple of years time.
