2022 Honda Civic Type R to get even more power

Our exclusive images preview how the next Civic Type R might look

  • Civic Type R has been spotted in development
  • Longer wheelbase than current model
  • Large spoiler remains

The Honda Civic Type R hot hatchback is set to be replaced in 2022 and our exclusive images suggest how the new model might look. A rival to the Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane RS and Mercedes-AMG A35, the current car starts at just over £32,000, and we’d expect the next model to cost very slightly more.

We’ve not even seen the next-generation Honda Civic testing yet but spy photographers have captured the hot Type R variant in development. An enormous rear spoiler and sharp bumpers will still feature but the styling may be toned down slightly. The current Type R is certainly the most outlandish hot hatch to look at, even if you can add spoilers and front bumper canards to Mercedes’ hot hatchbacks.

The current Civic is one of the class leaders in terms of practicality and the new model is set to improve on that with a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). This should improve passenger space, and the boot will still be a good size even with the steeply raked rear windscreen.

Unlike the newly launched Honda Jazz, the high-performance Civic probably won’t get a hybrid powertrain. The regular Civic will almost certainly get electrification, as Honda plans to introduce hybrid or electric models of its entire mainstream range in the next couple of years.

Instead, the current Type R’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine may get a rework, liberating extra power and slightly improving fuel economy. The 316bhp Civic Type R is already more powerful than many of its rivals but a figure nearer to 330bhp seems likely for the next model. A six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive are likely to remain too.

Speaking to our sister site Auto Express, Honda’s European senior vice president, Tom Gardener, said: “We have our main pillars that are going to be electrified. Clearly we have a very famous product, such as the [Type R] derivative of the Civic… but no decisions have been made on that yet.

“We’re very much aware of customers’ strong appreciation of the current model, and we’ll have to deeply consider the best progress forward.”

Inside, the aftermarket sat nav screen is expected to be replaced with the same nine-inch screen fitted to the new Jazz, and a two-spoke wheel similar to the one fitted in the Honda e could be used in the Civic Type R - albeit with a flat bottom and red suede-like inserts. The Type R’s trademark red bucket seats will almost certainly be carried over.

What does it mean for car buyers?

Hot hatch buyers have plenty to look forward to in the next couple of years; the Volkswagen Golf GTI, GTI Clubsport and Golf R will all go on sale, along with a new Cupra Leon and a Toyota GR Corolla.

The Civic Type R is one of the most raucous and focused hot hatches, but the current car also manages to be comfortable when you’re not driving quickly. Its popularity means prices remain high, and it’ll still be a sought after car despite selling in greater numbers than its predecessor. A recently revealed limited-edition Type R has already sold out.
