Plentiful power and an ideal 50:50 weight distribution give the Polestar 2 a planted feel

The entry-level, standard range single motor Polestar 2 is front-wheel drive and has 221bhp. Go for the long range version and power increases to 228bhp and both cars manage 0-62mph in just over seven seconds. It feels like ample performance, with enough acceleration available to make light work of overtaking. It also handles just as well as the more expensive versions, although you can’t opt for the Performance Pack on this model.
Step up to the dual-motor version and you get a power increase to 402bhp and four-wheel drive, with a huge, lag-free 600Nm of torque. The powertrain can get the EV from 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds, which, while significantly slower than the 3.1 seconds for the Performance version of the Model 3, is very quick. Power is produced evenly between the front and rear motors and weight is also distributed 50:50, so the Polestar 2 has an impressive sense of balance on the road.
It certainly grips well as it carves through longer corners, giving the driver plenty of confidence. You can tell the battery pack gives the car a low centre of gravity, and the instant shove of the electric powertrain is addictive. It may not match the Model 3 from 0-60 but it’s just as fun on a twisty road; the steering has less feel than a BMW 3 Series but it does tell you more about what’s going on with the front wheels than in a Model 3.
Spend an extra £5,000 for Polestar's Performance Pack and suspension dampers by renowned firm Ohlins are fitted, along with uprated Brembo front brakes, 20-inch forged alloy wheels, gold valve caps and even gold seatbelts inside. You can change the settings of the dampers manually but you have to jack the car up to access the settings for the rear wheels, so it remains to be seen how many owners will actually do this - and how often.
