New 2022 Toyota Aygo to transform into a mini SUV

The next Toyota Aygo will be thoroughly overhauled and looks set to have more crossover styling. This Toyota Aygo X Prologue concept is likely to be quite similar to the eventual production model, which will go on sale in 2022 with influences from the bigger Toyota Yaris.
The Aygo X Prologue features boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, connected by a light bar that sits underneath the Toyota badge. The tail-lights are very similar to the current car - and may be carried over to save costs - and frame the rear windscreen. It introduces a higher ride height than the current Aygo, plus big wheels and roof rails. The car’s more rugged look is aided by a two-tone paint scheme.
As it’s a concept, you can expect a few of the more dramatic styling touches to be toned down before the car reaches showrooms. For example, it’s likely the production model won’t sit on large 19-inch alloy wheels (the existing Aygo rides on 15-inch versions), and the wheel arches may be brought in slightly.
As well as taller, the Aygo X Prologue is slightly longer than the model it’ll replace, and the distance between the axles is greater too. That should make the Aygo more spacious, both for passengers and their luggage. We’re told buyers will sit as high as they would in the upcoming Toyota Yaris Cross.
Toyota has confirmed that the Aygo will move onto a new platform, which is also used by the latest Yaris. Using this ‘GA-B’ platform could allow Toyota to give the Aygo a new interior, and we’re told that the inside of the car has already been designed - although no images have been released yet. As such, the Aygo could offer better-quality materials and more equipment without prices rising too sharply.
There won’t be a fully electric version of the new Aygo and Toyota’s hybrid nous is unlikely to be used in the Aygo either. An updated version of the current Aygo’s 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is the most likely powerplant, although a less powerful version of the Yaris’s 1.5-litre engine could be used.
Rivals will include the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto, while others like the Fiat 500 and SEAT Mii have moved to purely electric powertrains. Toyota has taken full control of the factory that builds the current Aygo and its mechanically identical Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1 twins, so these two cars probably won’t be replaced.
What does it mean for car buyers?
It’s something of a surprise that a new Aygo is in development at all because so many other manufacturers are discontinuing them. Making a small car that’s safe, economical, sufficiently equipped and, importantly, affordable is very difficult, which is why the new Aygo will share parts with the larger Yaris.
The new Aygo will probably be more expensive than the model it’ll replace. In 2020 Toyota slashed the Aygo range, getting rid of the entry-level versions, so now it starts from just over £12,500. A buffer will remain between the Aygo and the £20,000 Yaris, so a starting price of around £14,000 seems likely.
