It may be the latest Skoda Octavia that takes all the plaudits, but the honest Skoda Scala shouldn’t be overlooked. Not everyone needs quite as much space as the Octavia, and the Scala offers a similar level of space to a SEAT Leon and Ford Focus at a lower price. Skoda now offers a £1,500 deposit contribution, and a two-year service plan for £199 (which will save you money down the line). Mid-range SE spec (our pick of the range) includes rear parking sensors, cruise control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The latest Nissan Juke is far better than its predecessor, the car that really set off the craze for small SUVs. There’s an economical petrol engine, more equipment, a newer feel and, importantly, extra space for passengers and luggage. For the time being, there’s also a £750 deposit contribution, and you don’t have to put much in upfront. Acenta trim gets ‘big car’ features such as LED headlights, an eight-inch touchscreen and a reversing camera.

It gets adaptive headlights, keyless entry, plenty of driving-assistance technology and even massaging front seats. We’ve chosen the petrol engine over the diesel because it’s noticeably quicker and still promises 40mpg fuel economy.
